Job Description

Role Overview

This position places you at the centre of a busy logistics operation, where you will take full ownership of the workshop's daily output and the mechanical health of a mixed fleet of trucks, wheel loaders, forklifts, and company vehicles. Your primary mission is to keep every asset moving by blending hands-on technical expertise with strong people management, ensuring that maintenance work is planned, executed, and documented in a way that directly supports fleet uptime and cost control. Beyond fixing breakdowns, you will act as the technical backbone for the logistics team, setting standards for diagnostics, preventive care, and workshop discipline that keep operations running smoothly and safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the mechanic team – allocate work based on priority and skill level, monitor output, and coach team members to raise the overall quality of maintenance and repair work.
  • Own fleet uptime targets – implement daily, weekly, and long-term maintenance plans that consistently keep truck, loader, forklift, and company car availability at or above required performance levels (85% baseline, with a long-term goal of exceeding 95%).
  • Perform and oversee diagnostics – carry out structured fault-finding on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and engine systems, then guide mechanics through effective and lasting repairs.
  • Plan and schedule all maintenance – create weekly work rosters for mechanics, align service intervals with operational needs, and coordinate with the logistics manager to minimise disruption when vehicles are taken off the road.
  • Maintain accurate workshop records – track work orders, service histories, and inspection results in the vehicle management system so that every maintenance action is logged in a clear and chronological manner.
  • Coordinate parts and procurement – identify required spare parts and consumables, raise requests with the purchasing team, and liaise with the store to ensure critical items are always available for scheduled jobs.
  • Ensure regulatory and safety compliance – keep the fleet aligned with government inspection standards (including NTSA requirements), arrange mandatory vehicle inspections, and uphold strict housekeeping and health-and-safety practices across the workshop.
  • Support budgeting and asset acquisition – provide accurate input for the workshop budget, justify major expenditure with structured reasoning, and contribute technical specifications when the company purchases new trucks, loaders, or forklifts.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Formal technical education – a degree, diploma, or recognised vocational qualification in automotive engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Proven supervisory experience – at least 5 years working as a workshop supervisor, senior mechanic, or fleet maintenance lead with direct responsibility for a team.
  • Advanced vehicle and machinery knowledge – solid understanding of truck systems, wheel loaders, forklifts, and their hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical components, including the ability to read technical diagrams and service manuals.
  • Hands-on diagnostic ability – confidence in using diagnostic tools and methods to identify faults quickly and accurately, then implementing effective preventive and corrective actions.
  • Valid driving licence and truck certification – a current licence with the competence and certification to drive trucks up to 10-wheelers, along with a clean driving record.
  • Commitment to safety and process discipline – a demonstrated ability to follow established procedures, enforce safety guidelines, and maintain organised, hazard-free working conditions.
