Role Overview
This is a faculty appointment that blends classroom teaching, postgraduate research supervision, and academic service inside a Public Health department. The postholder carries a teaching load across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes while simultaneously building an independent research portfolio, securing grant funding, and helping junior colleagues and students develop their own scholarly work. The role matters because the department's accreditation standing, research output, and the quality of its postgraduate graduates all depend on academics who can teach rigorously, publish credibly, and take on the administrative and quality-assurance work that keeps programmes running well.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver lectures, tutorials, seminars, and skills-based practical sessions in Public Health to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, following the teaching allocation set by the department.
- Provide technical input into the design, development, review, and rollout of curricula and syllabi, including the preparation of training guidelines, policies, and business plans.
- Set, moderate, and administer examinations, and take part in internal and external moderation of university examinations.
- Advise and mentor students academically, and supervise master's and PhD candidates from proposal writing through thesis development and examination, including identifying appropriate supervisors and examiners.
- Conduct independent and collaborative research within a public health specialisation, apply for and manage research and health development grants, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at conferences and seminars.
- Contribute to quality assurance, accreditation, and audit activities, including review of the training resources and practice sites used by the department.
- Mentor junior academic staff, including graduate assistants, tutorial fellows, visiting lecturers, and adjunct faculty, and support student recruitment, orientation, and onboarding.
- Serve on departmental, faculty, and university committees, assist with work planning, scheduling, and budgeting, and represent the department at academic and stakeholder forums.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education and credentials
- PhD in Public Health, with a specialisation in Health Management, Health Informatics, or Health Economics, or a PhD in a closely related health discipline from a recognised institution.
- Formal training in Health Informatics, Health Records, or Health Management.
- Registration with the relevant professional body, where this applies.
Experience and knowledge
- At least five years of university-level teaching in Public Health, covering both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- A demonstrated track record in curriculum design, development, and review.
- Proven postgraduate supervision experience with master's and/or PhD candidates.
- Experience reviewing postgraduate proposals, theses, and dissertations, and serving on academic committees.
- Evidence of scholarly publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, plus demonstrated independent and/or collaborative research activity.
- Sound grasp of research methodology, research ethics, and academic integrity requirements, together with familiarity with postgraduate policies, examination procedures, and higher education regulatory standards.
- Background in quality assurance, curriculum review, or accreditation would be an added advantage.
Skills and competencies
- Strong pedagogical skills, with the ability to design fair assessments and give feedback that helps students improve.
- Excellent research and grant-writing capability.
- Clear written, verbal, and interpersonal communication, including with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
- Analytical, critical, and strategic thinking, with the capacity to interpret and apply university policies and academic regulations.
- Effective mentoring, coaching, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Solid ICT skills, including learning management and research management platforms.
- Ability to handle several assignments at once and deliver against strict deadlines, working both independently and as part of a team.
- High standards of integrity, accountability, and professionalism, with a commitment to an inclusive, student-centred postgraduate learning environment.
Why Join
This position suits an academic who wants to shape postgraduate education rather than simply deliver it. The postholder works alongside academic staff, students, and university management on curriculum reform, accreditation, and research strategy, and has scope to grow a funded research programme while mentoring the next generation of public health scholars and junior faculty. It is a role for someone who values research quality, teaching excellence, and the procedural discipline that keeps a department credible in front of regulators and peers.
