Role Overview
This position sits at the centre of credit decisioning for the bank's Corporate and Mortgage lending portfolios, where the holder reviews, analyses and rules on facility requests submitted by relationship teams and branch networks. Day to day, the job involves weighing financial statements, transaction histories and market conditions against the bank's credit policy and Central Bank of Kenya prudential requirements, then either approving within delegated authority or building a recommendation for cases that exceed it. The role matters because sound, timely credit decisions directly determine the quality of the loan book, the speed at which customers receive funding, and the bank's exposure to loss.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, analyse and decision credit applications from the Corporate and Mortgage business units, covering new facilities, renewals, single-transaction requests and amendments to existing terms, in line with the bank's credit policy, product standards and CBK prudential guidelines.
- Prepare and forward recommendations for proposals that fall outside delegated lending authority, ensuring submissions are complete, well-reasoned and compliant with agreed turnaround times, service levels and quality benchmarks.
- Independently verify credit information and documentation supplied by relationship managers and customers, including bank statements and financial statements, and pursue clarification from alternative sources where figures or disclosures appear inconsistent.
- Engage relationship managers and branches to resolve queries, obtain missing information or documents, and assess deviation requests against the supporting business rationale.
- Support the development and periodic refresh of credit processes, policy documents, manuals and product standards relating to Corporate and Mortgage lending.
- Conduct client, business centre and branch visits, either independently or alongside relationship managers and management, to build first-hand understanding of the borrower, the underlying business and the operating market.
- Monitor the Corporate and Mortgage portfolios for upcoming renewals, limit expiries, early vintage performance, account migration and past due balances, flagging emerging risks to management.
- Produce industry reports and peer comparison papers covering business, operational and financial indicators, drawing on credit reports, press coverage, trade publications and other industry sources.
- Attend to audit requirements for the Corporate and Mortgage Credit Unit, preparing responses to audit remarks and following through on agreed rectification actions.
