Senior Consultant – Climate and Sustainable Finance

Role Overview

This role sits within a regional advisory practice focused on mobilising capital for climate and sustainability goals across East Africa. You will help governments, development partners, and financial institutions design practical financing strategies, structure investment vehicles, and prepare projects that are ready for funding. Your day-to-day work involves bridging policy ambition with bankable transactions, ensuring that climate commitments translate into measurable, accountable investments.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the design and refinement of client strategies for climate and sustainable finance, including investment frameworks, capital mobilisation roadmaps, and prioritisation of green initiatives.
• Contribute to the structuring of blended finance vehicles and mechanisms that combine public, concessional, and private capital, using instruments such as guarantees, viability gap funding, and catalytic grants.
• Help clients build and manage project pipelines for climate investments, from initial screening and concept development through to feasibility assessments and preparation for investor engagement.
• Prepare financing cases, concept notes, investment briefs, and market assessments that articulate the commercial and developmental rationale for proposed climate programmes.
• Advise on institutional arrangements, governance structures, and accountability systems that enable transparent and effective deployment of climate finance.
• Develop results frameworks, monitoring approaches, and verification procedures to track the financial flows and development impact of sustainable investments.
• Assist in identifying new business opportunities, drafting proposals, and engaging with stakeholders across governments, multilateral agencies, NGOs, and private sector partners.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Zambia to share knowledge and strengthen the firm’s climate finance offerings.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A minimum of three years of practitioner experience in climate finance, sustainable finance, development finance, investment advisory, project preparation, or related fields.
• A Master’s degree in climate finance, sustainable finance, economics, environmental economics, development studies, finance, public policy, or a similar discipline.
• Working knowledge of key climate finance mechanisms and institutions, such as the Green Climate Fund, Adaptation Fund, Global Environment Facility, Climate Investment Funds, and bilateral facilities—including their investment criteria, accreditation processes, fiduciary standards, and gender or safeguard requirements.
• Familiarity with financing tools used to support climate action, including blended finance, concessional finance, results-based financing, sustainability-linked loans, green lending, and other de-risking or catalytic instruments.
• Experience supporting governments, development partners, INGOs, multilateral agencies, financial institutions, or private sector actors on climate or sustainable finance assignments.
• Ability to conduct economic, financial, market, and policy analysis and translate findings into actionable recommendations for clients.
• Financial modelling skills to assess project cash flows, financing scenarios, and investment viability.
• Exposure to ESG reporting, sustainability reporting, climate-related disclosure, MRV frameworks, or impact measurement and verification.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical content to both policy and investment audiences.
• Demonstrated organisational and project management capabilities, including the ability to handle multiple assignments across teams and sectors in a consulting environment.
