Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will build the services and orchestration layer behind an enterprise AI platform, from agent workflows and retrieval systems to integrations with business software. You will work with AI, data science, and frontend colleagues to turn these capabilities into secure, reliable software that can run in on-premise and air-gapped environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services, microservices, and workflow logic for coordinating AI agents.
• Build and maintain secure integrations with SAP S/4HANA, SAP Ariba, enterprise data platforms, and other external sources.
• Develop RAG services that retrieve relevant information using vector databases and related retrieval technologies.
• Create and support API-based connections, using suitable protocols and controls for enterprise environments.
• Implement authentication, role-based permissions, audit trails, and data-protection measures.
• Prepare backend systems for on-premise and air-gapped deployment, with attention to security, performance, and availability.
• Monitor services, investigate production issues, and improve reliability through tracing, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
• Coordinate with AI, data science, and frontend teams, documenting technical decisions and delivery requirements.

Requirements & Qualifications

• At least five years of backend engineering experience, ideally involving distributed systems or production AI platforms.
• Strong Python development skills, including hands-on use of FastAPI and/or Django.
• Proficiency in Go or Java in addition to Python.
• Practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes, microservices, and distributed-system design.
• Solid understanding of REST APIs, gRPC, and API gateways such as Kong or NGINX.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and vector databases; familiarity with Weaviate or Milvus is relevant.
• Knowledge of AI agent frameworks, RAG patterns, and enterprise AI architecture.
• A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related discipline is indicated for this role.
• Experience in secure, high-availability systems; work in FinTech, healthcare, or defense would be an advantage.
• Familiarity with SAP integration protocols, including OData and SOAP, is beneficial.
• Strong analytical, collaboration, and technical writing skills.
