Role Overview

The Studio Technician – Digital Media keeps production spaces, equipment, and post-production workflows ready for teaching and creative work. Working with students, faculty, and department staff, this hands-on role supports productions from setup through editing, while helping users build the technical skills to create professional-quality media safely and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, operate, and pack down equipment for news programs, interviews, podcasts, and multi-camera productions, including studio and field cameras, switchers, audio consoles, lighting, teleprompters, and streaming systems.
  • Inspect and maintain production equipment, troubleshoot faults, arrange repairs, and keep studios and control rooms organised, calibrated, and safe to use.
  • Manage equipment loans and inventory, recording check-outs and returns for cameras, microphones, lighting kits, and other production resources.
  • Coach students and faculty in editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Avid Media Composer, and provide assistance with After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, motion graphics, visual effects, and colour grading.
  • Support graphic design and layout work for print and digital projects, including infographics, promotional materials, and student publications.
  • Maintain post-production processes for organising, transcoding, managing, and archiving media assets.
  • Deliver practical training on safe equipment use and provide support during scheduled lab sessions and independent projects.
  • Create and update accessible guides, tutorials, and operating procedures, and assist with studio scheduling, equipment administration, and procurement.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Media Production, Communications, Broadcasting, or a related field from a recognised or accredited institution.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in broadcast television, media production, or an academic studio environment at a university or comparable institution.
  • Practical proficiency with studio production equipment, including multi-camera workflows, video switchers such as TriCaster or Ross, and audio mixing consoles.
  • Experience creating digital media, with skills in graphic design and layout, motion graphics, and visual effects software.
  • A portfolio or demo reel demonstrating media or journalism work is an advantage; credits for completed or exhibited work are also welcomed.
  • Strong troubleshooting, organisation, and attention to detail, with the ability to explain technical and creative processes clearly to people with varied levels of experience.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an academic setting, and flexibility to work evenings or weekends when production schedules require.
