Role Overview
This role focuses on building a profitable book of SME general insurance business by actively hunting for new clients and nurturing existing relationships. You will own the full sales cycle, from first contact to policy conversion, while also identifying cross-selling angles that deepen each client’s connection to the company. The work directly supports the Retail & SME divisional growth strategy, so your ability to spot opportunities and move them to close is critical.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and manage a healthy pipeline of prospective SME clients across defined target sectors, using your own research, referrals, and networking to create consistent lead flow.
- Design and present tailored general insurance proposals, competitive quotations, and formal tender responses that address each prospect’s specific risk profile and business needs.
- Conduct regular check-ins with existing SME clients to review coverage, resolve concerns, and identify opportunities to add or upgrade policies through cross-selling.
- Plan and run targeted sales campaigns, client engagement events, and market activation activities aimed at increasing penetration within underserved SME niches.
- Research and evaluate potential partnerships, industry associations, and niche segments that could unlock new streams of SME business.
- Negotiate with insurers and internal underwriting teams to secure competitive pricing, favourable terms, and fast turnaround times for client submissions.
- Track competitor activity, emerging market trends, and regulatory shifts, translating those insights into actionable business development strategies.
- Maintain accurate records in the CRM and ensure all documentation meets internal governance standards and regulatory requirements.
- Deliver weekly and monthly reports on production volumes, pipeline health, conversion rates, and renewal performance.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a business-related discipline from a recognised university; candidates with a Diploma in Insurance (AIIK or ACII) are strongly preferred, and a Diploma in Marketing (CIM) is a plus.
- At least 3 years of proven experience in insurance sales, account management, or business development, ideally within general insurance; prior exposure to the SME market is an added advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to source and convert new business, with a track record of hitting sales targets and managing a healthy pipeline.
- Strong commercial acumen and negotiation skills, able to balance client expectations with profitability and risk appetite.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to engage decision-makers at small and medium-sized businesses.
- Solid working knowledge of general insurance products, including policy structures, coverage types, and market positioning across the SME segment.
- Highly organised and detail-oriented, capable of preparing accurate quotations, documentation, and reports under tight deadlines.
- Post-holder must be results-driven, collaborative, and able to work with integrity while maintaining compliance with internal policies and industry regulations.
