Job Description

Role Overview

This position centres on delivering high-quality sports education within Strathmore School’s CBE framework while also leading competitive teams across multiple disciplines. Day to day, the Sports Teacher will plan and teach curricular sports lessons, run coaching sessions before and after school, and work with the broader Sports Department to maintain a lively and well-organised programme. The role matters because it shapes students’ physical development, teamwork, and discipline, while also raising the school’s profile through successful participation in local and national competitions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver sports-related lessons that align with the CBE curriculum, ensuring every student engages meaningfully with physical education.
  • Coach and manage school teams in at least two sports, with the expectation of regular training sessions and match-day preparation.
  • Collaborate with the Sports Department to design a cohesive annual sports calendar that balances curricular and extracurricular commitments.
  • Prepare teams for both internal fixtures and external tournaments, handling logistics such as selection, fixtures, equipment, and student welfare.
  • Assess and track student progress in sports-related learning areas, offering constructive feedback that supports growth in skill and character.
  • Promote sportsmanship, resilience, and inclusivity across all year groups, encouraging broad participation as well as elite performance.
  • Liaise with teaching staff, parents, and external organisers to coordinate schedules and communicate expectations around sporting events.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum mean grade of C+ at O-Level (KCSE or recognised equivalent).
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Education, with Sports taken as a teaching subject.
  • At least three years of classroom teaching experience, ideally in a primary or secondary school setting.
  • A proven record of at least three years’ high-level coaching in two or more sports, demonstrating the ability to develop talented athletes.
  • Valid registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and a current certificate of good conduct.
  • Specialisation in at least one of the following: Basketball, Rugby, Hockey, or Football – with a recognised coaching qualification in any of these seen as a notable advantage.
  • Added preference will be given to candidates who have coached across both primary and secondary levels, and who have prepared learners for KPSEA and KJSEA assessments in sports-related areas.
  • High energy, self-discipline, and strong leadership abilities, combined with a genuine commitment to nurturing the whole student – athlete and academic alike.
