Role Overview
This is a consultative, technical selling role rather than a catalogue-driven one. The person in this seat spends most of their week in site surveys, drawing reviews and tender rooms, assembling design-and-build packages that pull pre-engineered steel buildings, insulated panels, cold rooms and roofing systems into a single deliverable a client can actually build. Sitting between engineering and commercial functions, the role turns what a client genuinely needs — a distribution warehouse, a temperature-controlled hub, a processing facility — into a costed, buildable proposal that the business can execute at a healthy margin. Because these projects are won long before steel reaches site, this position shapes the order book, the revenue mix and the repeat work that keeps fabrication and installation crews fully engaged.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain a live sales pipeline spanning industrial, commercial, institutional, warehousing, logistics, cold chain, agro-processing and FMCG developments, shepherding each opportunity through qualification, proposal and award.
- Cultivate relationships with main contractors, property developers, architects, quantity surveyors, engineering consultants, EPC firms and end-user facility owners so that projects arrive through early involvement and referral rather than open tender alone.
- Sell integrated technical solutions — PEB frames, insulated panel envelopes, refrigerated rooms, roofing and truss systems — matching the offer to what the design and the client's budget can realistically support.
- Conduct site surveys and requirement assessments, relay findings to the technical team, and champion value-engineering options that trim client cost without cutting into agreed scope.
- Own the commercial paperwork end to end: bills of quantities, cost build-ups, proposals, tender submissions, pricing schedules, negotiation rounds and contract terms, all while protecting approved margin thresholds.
- Remain attached to projects after award — supporting handover into execution, managing variations and change orders, chasing collections, and converting completed jobs into repeat and referral business.
- Report regularly on pipeline health, order intake, revenue, margins, receivables, competitor activity and emerging market openings.
- Help identify and onboard dependable subcontractors, fabricators, erectors and refrigeration contractors capable of delivering to specification and programme.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, mechanical or architectural engineering, construction management, or another technical discipline tied to the built environment.
- Five to eight years of technical or project-based sales experience in construction, steel structures, PEB, cold chain, panel systems, HVAC or building services; a background with an established construction company is viewed favourably.
- A demonstrable record of closing turnkey, design-and-build or project contracts, going beyond transactional product sales.
- Solid working knowledge of the Kenyan construction market — how schemes progress from concept to tender, how BOQs are structured, how costs and margins are built up, and how contracts are negotiated.
- An existing network among Kenyan contractors, developers, architects, quantity surveyors and consultants.
- Confidence reading and interpreting architectural and structural drawings, extracting technical requirements from them, and pairing that insight with consultative, commercially grounded selling.
- Proficiency in MS Office and Excel; exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, MS Project or a CRM platform is an advantage.
- Familiarity with NCA, NEMA, occupational safety and relevant cold chain or food safety requirements would be beneficial.
- A current driving licence and passport, with the appetite to travel frequently across Kenya and the wider East African region.
- Fluency in both English and Kiswahili.
