Job Description

Role Overview

This is the most senior finance position in a savings and credit co-operative, sitting between the CEO, the Board and a working accounting and procurement team. Day to day, the role holder keeps the books accurate and IFRS-compliant, monitors liquidity against members' deposit and lending cycles, and converts the Sacco's strategic plan into budgets, forecasts and treasury decisions. Because a Sacco holds member money in trust, the strength of the financial controls and statutory reporting coming out of this seat has a direct bearing on the institution's licence to operate and on member confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly, quarterly and annual reporting cycle — financial statements, management accounts and Board papers — prepared to IFRS and able to withstand audit and regulatory scrutiny.
  • Run the annual budgeting and planning process end to end, then track performance against plan, refresh forecasts and flag variances to management early enough to act on.
  • Partner with the CEO and Board on financial strategy, showing how capital, lending and investment choices line up with the Sacco's wider strategic goals.
  • Keep the Sacco compliant with the Co-operative Societies Act, the Sacco Societies Act and its regulations, KRA tax obligations and other statutory requirements.
  • Manage cash flow, treasury forecasting and liquidity so loan demand is funded, idle balances are kept low and member obligations are always met.
  • Build and maintain internal controls, risk management systems and accountability frameworks that protect assets and reduce exposure to fraud, error and operational loss.
  • Direct the accounts and procurement functions, and act as the finance lead through internal and external audits, driving implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Lead, appraise and develop the finance and operations team, setting performance targets and pushing forward the automation and digitisation of finance processes.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Agribusiness or another business-related field from a recognised university.
  • CPA(K) or an equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • At least six years' practical experience inside a financial institution, of which a minimum of three years must have been in a management role.
  • A Master's degree, such as an MBA or equivalent, is an added advantage.
  • Hands-on competence preparing IFRS-compliant financial statements and management reports, with experience presenting to a Board or senior leadership audience.
  • Working knowledge of Kenyan co-operative and Sacco regulation and KRA tax requirements, plus familiarity with audit processes and follow-through on recommendations.
  • Proven treasury and liquidity management skills, including cash flow forecasting and resource allocation.
  • Demonstrated ability to design internal controls, manage risk, supervise teams and lead process automation or system improvements.
