Job Description

Role Overview

This nursing position focuses on delivering hands-on care to patients living with chronic kidney disease, with an emphasis on both haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatments. On any given day, you will prepare patients for dialysis, operate and troubleshoot equipment, monitor vital signs throughout procedures, and step in quickly if complications arise. Your role is central to ensuring each treatment session is safe, comfortable, and effective, while also helping patients understand their condition and manage it at home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough nursing assessments of renal patients and develop individualized care plans that account for each patient’s physical condition, emotional state, and treatment history.
  • Prepare dialysis machines and circuits, verify all safety parameters, and initiate and terminate haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis sessions in line with unit protocols.
  • Observe patients continuously during dialysis, monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, fluid balance, and neurological status; recognize early warning signs of complications and respond with appropriate interventions.
  • Administer intravenous medications, heparin, saline, and other prescribed therapies while carefully documenting dosages and patient reactions.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on kidney disease management, including dietary sodium and potassium limits, fluid restrictions, medication schedules, and proper care of vascular access sites or peritoneal catheters.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain dialysis equipment after each use, strictly following infection prevention standards to minimize the risk of healthcare-associated infections.
  • Record accurate and timely notes on patient assessments, treatment sessions, clinical outcomes, and any adverse events using the facility’s health records system.
  • Collaborate with nephrologists, dietitians, pharmacists, and social workers to coordinate comprehensive care and adjust treatment plans based on evolving patient needs.
  • Take part in unit-based quality improvement projects, clinical audits, and educational sessions to continuously elevate the standard of renal care provided.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution, along with a valid nursing license and current registration with the relevant regulatory body.
  • At least two years of practical nursing experience in a renal or dialysis unit; candidates with equivalent acute care experience may also be considered.
  • Additional certification such as a Higher Diploma in Renal Nursing or a recognized nephrology nursing course is a strong advantage.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is desirable.
  • Demonstrated competence in operating dialysis equipment, managing vascular access, and responding to dialysis-related emergencies.
  • Thorough understanding of infection control practices, safe handling of blood products, and aseptic techniques in renal care.
  • Strong clinical documentation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly with patients of varying health literacy levels.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and to function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
