Protection Intern

Role Overview

This internship sits within a regional protection unit, where you will support legal and policy work aimed at strengthening national asylum systems, reducing statelessness, and expanding durable solutions for displaced people. Day to day, you will conduct research, track legal and human rights developments, help prepare analytical products, and contribute to team coordination under the supervision of a Protection Officer. Your work will directly inform how the Bureau supports country operations, engages with governments and partners, and communicates protection priorities across the region.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out legal, policy, and protection research on forced displacement, statelessness, asylum systems, human rights, and durable solutions, summarizing findings for internal use.
• Gather, compile, and analyse data on statelessness, fraud case management, human rights compliance, judicial developments, and durable solutions, helping to present the data in clear formats.
• Draft and refine reports, briefing notes, presentations, correspondence, and statistical updates for senior management and external stakeholders.
• Contribute to advocacy, communication, and information materials focused on protection, statelessness prevention and reduction, and durable solutions.
• Monitor national laws, policies, strategic plans, and human rights situations, flagging relevant changes and progress on protection and statelessness indicators across country operations.
• Support assessments and analysis related to voluntary repatriation, local integration, complementary pathways, and resettlement, where applicable.
• Help plan, organize, and document meetings, webinars, training sessions, consultations, and events, including activities tied to the organization’s 75th anniversary.
• Review Multi-Year Strategic Plans to identify country-level outputs and outcomes related to statelessness, supporting regional oversight and reporting efforts.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Be a current student in an undergraduate or graduate programme at a university or higher education institution accredited by IAU/UNESCO, or have graduated within the past two years.
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to the work of the organization, such as law, international relations, social sciences, or a related discipline.
• Bachelor’s degree in law, international relations, social sciences, or another relevant field is considered an asset.
• Familiarity with the organization’s mandate and operations, particularly in relation to statelessness prevention and durable solutions, is desirable.
