Role Overview

The Department of Biomedical Sciences at Aga Khan University is appointing a full-time Pharmacology faculty member to anchor undergraduate teaching across the MBChB, BSc and nursing programmes while carrying a substantive academic and research leadership remit. Day to day, the post holder designs and delivers lectures, small-group sessions and online learning materials, coordinates the logistics of teaching and assessment, and works with clinical and biomedical colleagues to keep the curriculum integrated and current. The role matters because it determines how research expertise is drawn into the everyday life of the discipline and how the department's teaching reputation is extended through partnerships within AKU and beyond it.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach Pharmacology across MBChB, BSc and nursing undergraduate programmes using lectures, small-group facilitation and online materials.
• Share responsibility for the operational planning and management of Pharmacology teaching and assessment sessions — sequencing, scheduling, health and safety considerations and resource use — while balancing competing pressures so that sessions are well organised and pedagogically sound.
• Contribute to curriculum development and to innovation in teaching, learning and assessment, working with colleagues to build an integrated curriculum and to engage students through interactive methods, including new technology and imaging.
• Participate in the regular evaluation and development of Pharmacology-containing blocks in terms of content, delivery and assessment, using evaluation evidence to improve learning quality and the student experience, and sharing findings with students and staff.
• Provide academic support, advice and formative feedback to Medical College and SONAM students, including resident feedback through 360-degree evaluations.
• Develop and supervise a student-selected component project within the MBChB programme as required, advise and supervise postgraduate students, and take part in departmental examinations — written and OSCE preparation, standard setting and invigilation.
• Conduct and disseminate scholarship or research in medical education or a relevant specialist field, pursue grant funding for research activity, and maintain a programme of personal and collaborative enquiry that supports professional growth.
• Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, represent the Medical College and SONAM at local, regional and national meetings relevant to medical education and Pharmacology, and help build external networks that support recruitment, outreach, income generation and consultancy.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Medical degree or a good honours degree in Pharmacology.
• Postgraduate degree in Pharmacology.
• Current academic standing at Senior Instructor level or above.
• Demonstrated accomplishment in teaching Pharmacology within an undergraduate medical programme or comparable setting, using evidence-informed interactive approaches with both large and small groups and incorporating information technology.
• Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in programmes other than MBChB, BSc Nursing or their equivalent.
• Capability in educational management, ensuring well-organised delivery alongside continuous quality improvement.
• Active research interest and competence, evidenced by a track record of publications in international journals.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to prioritise work independently, think critically and solve problems, with the flexibility to meet deadlines and take initiative while seeking advice when needed.
• Strong teamwork and the ability to lead and manage delegated tasks and small projects, with a mature professional presence that commands respect among colleagues and residents.
