Pharmaceutical Technologist

Role Overview

You will step into a busy pharmaceutical environment where your primary focus is assisting the supervising pharmacist with the safe, accurate, and timely supply of medicines. Each day involves more than simply passing prescriptions across the counter: you will verify medication dosages, check for possible interactions, guide patients on proper usage, and handle the behind-the-scenes inventory work that keeps essential drugs in stock and within expiry. Your attention to detail directly supports patient safety and helps the pharmacy maintain full compliance with national regulatory bodies while running efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and hand out both prescription-only and over-the-counter medicines, double-checking that every order matches the prescription and the correct dose.
• Explain to patients how to take their medicines, including timing, food restrictions, and what to do if they miss a dose.
• Offer practical advice on potential side effects, drug interactions, and the proper storage of different pharmaceutical products.
• Screen prescriptions against treatment guidelines and alert the pharmacist to any suspected irrational drug use or dosing concerns.
• Unpack incoming deliveries, verify their accuracy against orders and invoices, and accurately record batch numbers and expiry dates.
• Monitor stock movements to prevent shortages or overstocking, rotate stock appropriately, and quarantine expired or damaged items for disposal.
• Maintain up-to-date records of dispensary transactions, stock adjustments, and product recalls, producing periodic summaries for review.
• Report adverse drug reactions or suspected substandard medicines to the responsible pharmacist for onward submission to the relevant authority.
• Help prepare supplier orders, coordinate with vendors for timely replenishment, and support internal and external audit preparation.
• Uphold strict confidentiality, hygiene, and safety standards across all pharmacy work areas.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised training institution.
• Current, valid registration/licensing with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board or your country's equivalent regulatory body.
• Minimum of two years' practical experience in a hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, or pharmaceutical supply chain setting.
• Working knowledge of common drug classes, dosage forms, storage requirements, stock-control methods, and pharmaceutical regulations.
• Proven ability to counsel patients clearly and professionally, across different levels of health literacy.
• Accuracy and honesty when handling prescriptions, medicines, and confidential patient data.
