Pharmaceutical Technologist

Role Overview

This position is the operational backbone of a busy pharmacy setting, working alongside a licensed pharmacist to keep every prescription cycle safe, accurate, and compliant from shelf to patient. You will handle day-to-day dispensing, inventory oversight, and patient guidance, while also helping to protect the pharmacy against drug shortages, expired stock, and regulatory infractions. Your work directly shapes patient safety and the pharmacy's standing with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and hand over prescribed and non-prescription medicines, double-checking each order against the prescription for correctness of drug, strength, and label instructions.
• Provide clear, practical guidance to patients on how to take their medicines, what side effects to watch for, and how to properly store medications at home.
• Screen for potential drug interactions, duplications, or contraindications and flag concerns to the supervising pharmacist before dispensing.
• Receive deliveries from suppliers, confirm them against purchase orders or invoices, and verify that quantities, batch numbers, and expiry dates are correctly logged.
• Run ongoing stock analyses to identify fast-moving items, slow movers, and near-expiry products so that stock-outs and overstocking are prevented without wasting resources.
• Maintain precise records for all stock movements, controlled substances, and pharmacy transactions, and produce monthly or ad-hoc inventory reports for management.
• Enforce compliance by keeping dispensing practices aligned with PPB rules, internal protocols, and national pharmacy standards, including hygiene and confidentiality controls.
• Report adverse drug reactions, suspected counterfeit medicines, or product quality issues through the appropriate pharmacovigilance channels, and support internal or external audits as needed.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from an accredited institution.
• Active, valid registration and licensure with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.
• At least two years of practical experience in a hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, or pharmaceutical supply chain environment.
• Demonstrated understanding of pharmaceutical product categories, cold-chain handling, narcotic regulations, and stock-control techniques such as FIFO/FEFO.
• Ability to communicate medication instructions in a clear, empathetic, and culturally sensitive manner to diverse patient populations.
• Strong numerical literacy for stock reconciliation, inventory counts, and reporting tasks.
• High integrity, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to maintain composure during busy periods.
