Job Description

Role Overview

This position places a qualified pharmaceutical technologist at the heart of a busy hospital pharmacy, where accuracy and patient safety are non-negotiable. Day to day, you will interpret prescriptions, prepare and dispense medications, counsel patients on correct usage and potential side effects, and ensure every interaction leaves the patient feeling informed and cared for. Your vigilance helps prevent dispensing errors, improves medication adherence, and contributes directly to the hospital’s reputation for dependable, high-quality pharmaceutical care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and verify prescriptions for accuracy, legibility, dosage, and potential drug interactions before dispensing.
  • Prepare and dispense medications precisely, labeling them clearly and providing patients with tailored instructions on dosage, timing, storage, and possible side effects.
  • Proactively answer patient and client queries about both prescription and over-the-counter medicines, always prioritising safe and appropriate use.
  • Maintain meticulous records of dispensed drugs, controlled substances, and patient consultations in line with legal and professional standards.
  • Monitor and manage pharmacy stock levels, checking expiry dates and storage conditions while flagging shortages or supply issues to the supervising pharmacist or procurement team.
  • Work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff to clarify prescriptions and support seamless continuity of care within the hospital.
  • Keep the dispensing area clean, organised, and compliant with infection control and safety protocols at all times.
  • Support efficient patient flow by prioritising urgent prescriptions and using computer systems to log transactions accurately and quickly.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution.
  • Current, valid practicing license as a pharmaceutical technologist.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a busy hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of drug classifications, dosing principles, and common contraindications.
  • Excellent computer literacy, including the ability to use pharmacy dispensing software and electronic records with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centred care and consistent excellence in daily practice.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain medical information clearly to diverse patient populations.
  • Sound organisational skills and the composure to handle high prescription volumes accurately under pressure.
