Job Description

Role Overview

This consultant-level position places you at the helm of a dedicated paediatric cardiac service, managing children with heart conditions from the point of referral through diagnostic workup, intervention, and lifelong follow-up. Your clinical week will be a mix of outpatient clinics, inpatient ward consults, echocardiography studies, and cardiac catheterisation procedures, supported by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists, and specialist nurses. Beyond direct patient care, you will also play a key role in training junior doctors, reviewing complex cases, and shaping the quality of paediatric cardiac services in a busy referral environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough clinical assessments of paediatric patients with suspected or established cardiac disease, including detailed history-taking, cardiovascular examination, and diagnostic risk stratification.
  • Perform and interpret a full range of non-invasive cardiac investigations, including transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, foetal echocardiography, electrocardiography, Holter monitoring, and exercise stress testing.
  • Undertake diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures in children, such as balloon valvuloplasty, device closure of septal defects, and stent implantation, with appropriate patient selection and peri-procedural management.
  • Lead the acute management of paediatric cardiac emergencies, including arrhythmias, heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and post-operative instability, providing timely expert consultation to intensive care and emergency teams.
  • Collaborate with cardiothoracic surgeons to determine surgical timing and approach, contributing to pre-operative planning and shared decision-making for both corrective and palliative operations.
  • Develop and coordinate individualised, family-centred care plans that encompass long-term follow-up, growth and development monitoring, and structured transition of adolescents with chronic cardiac conditions into adult services.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records, participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, and contribute to clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives that drive better patient outcomes.
  • Support the professional development of resident doctors, medical students, and nursing staff through bedside teaching, structured didactic sessions, and simulation-based training in paediatric cardiology.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree or equivalent, in addition to a Master's degree in Paediatrics or Internal Medicine from a recognised university.
  • Completion of a formal fellowship or sub-specialty training programme in Paediatric Cardiology, with verified competencies in advanced cardiac imaging, interventional techniques, and complex clinical decision-making.
  • Valid registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), including specialist recognition in Cardiology, and compliance with all continuing professional development requirements.
  • A minimum of 7 years of cumulative medical practice, including at least 3 years dedicated specifically to the diagnosis and management of paediatric cardiac patients.
  • Demonstrated hands-on proficiency in paediatric echocardiography and cardiac catheterisation, supported by a procedural log or documented evidence of independent practice.
  • Strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage high-acuity, complex cases in a busy tertiary or referral setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling clear explanation of complex cardiac findings to families and effective collaboration across multiple specialties.
