Role Overview
This position places a licensed optometrist at the front line of patient eye care, carrying out vision assessments, diagnosing refractive and ocular conditions, and guiding patients toward the corrective solutions that suit their needs. Working within a clinical team, the optometrist balances direct patient contact with accurate record-keeping and the day-to-day functioning of the practice's optical instruments. The role matters because clear, correctly prescribed vision care directly shapes how patients read, work, drive, and go about daily life.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity testing, refraction, and assessment of binocular vision, to determine each patient's visual status.
- Diagnose refractive errors and identify signs of ocular disease or abnormality, determining whether cases can be managed in-house or require referral to an ophthalmologist or other specialist.
- Prescribe and dispense corrective lenses, fitting spectacles and contact lenses and verifying that prescriptions meet patients' visual and lifestyle requirements.
- Explain diagnoses, treatment options, and lens care instructions clearly to patients, answering questions in language they can understand.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records and clinical notes, using practice computer systems for scheduling, billing, and inventory tracking.
- Operate, calibrate, and care for optometric equipment such as autorefractors, slit lamps, tonometers, and trial lens sets, reporting faults promptly.
- Monitor and request stock for frames, lenses, and consumables, coordinating with the optical dispensary and suppliers to avoid shortages.
- Observe infection-control and safety standards during every examination, and contribute to the smooth daily flow of the clinic alongside colleagues.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Optometry from a recognised institution.
- Active licence and registration with the Optometrists' Association of Kenya.
- At least one (1) year of relevant post-qualification experience in a clinical or optical practice setting.
- Confidence using standard computer applications, including patient management or electronic record systems, spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain clinical findings to patients of varied backgrounds and ages.
- Attention to detail in refraction, prescription writing, and record-keeping.
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively within a multidisciplinary eye care team.
