Role Overview
As a Medical Officer, you will hold front-line clinical responsibility for patients across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings, moving between bedside assessment, treatment planning, and clear handover to the wider care team. The role sits at the point where clinical judgement meets documentation, so your notes, reports, and entries into the health management information system directly shape how the facility tracks outcomes and plans care. Getting decisions right at this level protects patients, keeps the facility compliant with Kenyan medical regulation, and sustains the trust that communities place in the institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine, diagnose, and treat patients presenting at outpatient clinics, wards, and the emergency or casualty area, adjusting management plans as clinical findings change.
- Conduct daily ward rounds, review admitted patients, and initiate or revise treatment in consultation with senior clinicians where escalation is needed.
- Perform and assist with routine clinical procedures within the scope of a licensed medical officer, referring complex cases onward appropriately.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies, initiating resuscitation and life-support measures consistent with BLS and ACLS protocols.
- Maintain accurate, timely patient records — case notes, prescriptions, investigation requests, and discharge summaries — in line with facility and regulatory documentation standards.
- Capture and submit clinical data through the Health Management Information System and prepare periodic reports on morbidity, mortality, and service delivery.
- Counsel patients and their families on diagnosis, treatment options, medication adherence, and follow-up, addressing concerns in plain language.
- Work alongside nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, and administrative colleagues to keep patient flow, referral, and follow-up processes running smoothly.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or MBBS) from a recognised university.
- Current registration and a valid practising licence issued by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- At least one (1) year of internship experience completed in a public or private hospital setting.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Working knowledge of healthcare policies, clinical documentation requirements, and reporting procedures.
- Competent computer user, with the ability to work in Health Management Information Systems and other clinical data platforms.
Desirable competencies
- Sound clinical decision-making and confident patient management, including prioritisation under pressure.
- Familiarity with the laws of Kenya, relevant regulations and guidelines, and national health schemes.
- Strong report-writing ability, with attention to accuracy and completeness.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with patients, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
