Role Overview
This position focuses on the day-to-day operation of a Self-Propelled Harvester (SPH) machine to efficiently harvest tea leaves while meeting strict quality and productivity targets. The role directly supports the estate’s harvest cycle by maintaining correct creep height, adhering to harvesting rounds, and performing routine machine checks to minimise downtime. Close coordination with mechanics for basic fault diagnosis and preventive maintenance ensures the SPH remains reliable, safe, and compliant with company policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the SPH machine to harvest tea according to prescribed standards, ensuring optimal green leaf quality and consistent harvesting rounds.
- Conduct pre-start inspections, daily checks, and handover procedures to verify machine readiness and safety before each shift.
- Monitor and adjust harvesting height (creep) to meet agronomic requirements and avoid damage to the tea bushes.
- Identify and report basic mechanical faults or performance issues, working with SPH Mechanics to resolve problems quickly.
- Support scheduled preventive maintenance activities, including cleaning, lubrication, and component checks as directed.
- Maintain accurate records of machine usage, harvest volumes, and any incidents or repairs for operational reporting.
- Follow all safety protocols and company procedures during operation, refuelling, and machine handling.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Valid Class C and G driving licences (required by local regulations for operating SPH and tractor units).
- Proven hands-on experience with SPH machines and/or tractor operation in an agricultural setting.
- Two to three years of relevant experience in harvesting or machinery operation, preferably in tea or plantation crops.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively within a team under minimal supervision.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for fault detection and preventive maintenance tasks.
