Role Overview
This mud engineering position is an onsite technical role focused on keeping drilling fluid systems within specification so the drilling program proceeds safely and efficiently. You will monitor and test drilling fluids, direct mixing and pumping operations, and provide real-time treatment recommendations to the drilling team. The job also involves managing fluid-related costs, supporting field sales conversations, and mentoring less experienced engineers while upholding the company’s HSE, legal, compliance, and core-value expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Measure and test drilling fluid properties—such as density, viscosity, gel strength, filtrate, pH, chloride content, and solids—to confirm they meet the drilling program’s requirements.
- Supervise fluid mixing and pumping activities, including additive additions, and adjust formulations based on test results and changing well conditions.
- Provide technical analysis and clear, actionable recommendations to the drilling team for controlling fluid properties and addressing downhole challenges.
- Track and help control fluid-related costs, including product usage, inventory, and waste reduction, while maintaining service quality.
- Coordinate with rig personnel, drilling engineers, and service providers to align fluid strategy with daily drilling operations.
- Participate in field-level sales calls or accompany sales representatives to support customer conversations and identify appropriate product and service solutions.
- Train, direct, and mentor entry-level engineers on testing procedures, fluid systems, and onsite best practices.
- Complete all work in accordance with company HSE policies, legal requirements, compliance standards, and core values, including accurate documentation and reporting.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).
- At least 5 years of experience in drilling fluids products and services, with in-depth knowledge of fluid systems and applications.
- Ability to select the right product and service for simple through complex applications.
- Experience working effectively in a global matrix organization, with the ability to coordinate across teams and locations.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, including the ability to explain technical recommendations to rig and customer personnel.
- Exceptional organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Willingness and ability to travel, potentially to rig sites, customer facilities, meetings, and training events.
