Medical Officer In-Charge

Role Overview

This is a senior clinical leadership position for an experienced medical doctor who will oversee day-to-day medical services at a busy healthcare facility. You will split your time between direct patient care and the operational management of clinical teams, ensuring that medical officers, interns, and nursing staff deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care. Your leadership will directly shape clinical governance, emergency preparedness, and the quality of multidisciplinary care provided to patients.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate and supervise the daily clinical work of medical officers, ensuring smooth patient flow and appropriate allocation of resources across departments.
• Provide expert diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for a broad spectrum of adult and paediatric conditions, including managing complex or unstable patients.
• Lead clinical teams during medical emergencies, directing resuscitation efforts and coordinating timely referrals or transfers when specialist care is required.
• Implement and monitor clinical governance frameworks, including morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, and adherence to treatment protocols.
• Mentor junior doctors and medical interns, offering bedside teaching, constructive feedback, and structured professional development support.
• Liaise with nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, and administrative departments to resolve operational bottlenecks and improve care coordination.
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Records system, and promote data-driven improvements in clinical practice.
• Support the facility leadership in policy implementation, staff scheduling, and maintaining regulatory compliance with professional and safety standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from a recognised institution.
• A minimum of five years of post-internship clinical experience, with at least two years spent in a supervisory, managerial, or other formal leadership capacity.
• Current registration and a valid practising licence from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
• Demonstrated clinical proficiency in general medical practice, with the confidence to manage a wide range of acute and chronic conditions independently.
• Proven ability to lead, motivate, and mentor multidisciplinary teams in a hospital or high-volume clinic environment.
• Solid understanding of healthcare delivery systems, clinical governance principles, and hospital operations, including patient safety protocols.
• Strong emergency management skills, with the capacity to make rapid, well-reasoned decisions under pressure.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of building trust with patients, families, and colleagues across all levels.
• Hands-on competence with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and hospital information systems for clinical documentation and reporting.
• High ethical standards, personal integrity, and a consistent patient-centred approach to care delivery.
