Role Overview
As a medical laboratory professional, you will carry out diagnostic testing at a dispensary and ensure that specimens, results, equipment, and records are handled safely and reliably. Your work helps clinical teams make informed decisions, supports timely patient care, and contributes to the quality of services delivered at the facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and prepare specimens, perform routine laboratory tests, verify findings, and report results accurately and without unnecessary delay.
- Confirm patient identity and follow approved procedures for specimen labelling, transport, storage, referral, and disposal.
- Apply quality control and quality assurance procedures; escalate critical findings, testing errors, and safety incidents promptly.
- Use and care for laboratory instruments, carry out routine cleaning and checks, and report equipment faults or servicing requirements.
- Monitor reagents and consumable supplies, store them appropriately, and check stock levels and expiry dates.
- Keep complete, accurate records of tests, results, registers, statistics, and routine reports, using electronic health systems where available.
- Follow infection prevention, personal protective equipment, laboratory safety, confidentiality, and biomedical waste procedures.
- Coordinate with clinical and facility staff, support referrals and outreach or screening activities, and contribute to audits and service improvement.
- Provide practical guidance to students, interns, or support staff assigned to the laboratory, and maintain professional competence through continuing development.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognised institution.
- Current registration with the relevant Kenyan regulatory authority and a valid licence to practise.
- Relevant laboratory experience in a hospital, health centre, dispensary, NGO, or community health setting is an advantage.
- Experience in a rural or remote setting is an advantage.
- Sound computer skills and the ability to maintain clear records and prepare accurate reports.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clinical colleagues and other facility staff.
