Role Overview
As a Mechanical Engineer – Estimator, you will serve as the bridge between field operations and the back office, turning incoming service requests into clear, accurate, and competitive cost proposals. On a typical day, you will review job specifications, build cost breakdowns for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work, and update service records inside the company’s Field Service Management (FSM) platform. Your estimates directly influence which projects the company wins and how efficiently technicians are deployed, making your attention to detail and technical judgment essential to operational success.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare itemised estimates for residential and commercial service jobs, covering HVAC, plumbing, and electrical scopes with accurate labour, material, and equipment pricing.
- Work within the FSM software to create and track estimates, convert approved quotes into work orders, and maintain organised customer and job histories.
- Review incoming service requests and site notes to determine the full scope of work, flagging any uncertainties before pricing is finalised.
- Coordinate with field technicians to validate job conditions, clarify project requirements, and incorporate their field feedback into revised estimates.
- Support dispatch and scheduling efforts by sharing estimate timelines and helping prioritise urgent service calls alongside planned work.
- Monitor the status of open estimates and work orders, updating project documentation to reflect changes in scope, pricing, or completion dates.
- Maintain accurate records in line with internal procedures, ensuring all estimates are traceable, reproducible, and compliant with company standards.
- Communicate estimate details, assumptions, and progress updates clearly to customers, technicians, and internal team members.
- Identify recurring pricing patterns, common scope gaps, or process bottlenecks that could improve estimating accuracy and service turnaround times.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in mechanical engineering, building services engineering, HVAC engineering, or a directly related discipline.
- At least two years of hands-on experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or residential/commercial home service operations.
- Proven ability to prepare service cost estimates, quotations, or project bids with attention to both technical detail and commercial viability.
- Practical experience using Field Service Management (FSM) software; familiarity with platforms used for dispatch, work orders, and customer management is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of estimation, dispatch, or service management software tools and the confidence to learn new systems quickly.
- Solid understanding of residential or commercial HVAC, plumbing, and electrical system components, installation methods, and common service requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, for cost calculations, summaries, and reporting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to compare project specs against historical data and real-world constraints.
- Excellent organisation and communication skills, capable of juggling multiple estimates and deadlines without losing accuracy.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift and technicians rely on timely, reliable information.
