Job Description

Role Overview

You will act as the county-level anchor for maternal and newborn health programming, turning national strategies and workplans into daily action across supported health facilities. Your focus is on making care safer, faster and more consistent for mothers and newborns by strengthening clinical skills, emergency readiness, referral links and quality improvement practices. By working directly with county health teams, facility leaders and frontline providers, you ensure that high-impact interventions are not just planned but actually delivered, monitored and improved on the ground.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the rollout of maternal and newborn health activities in the assigned county, ensuring alignment with approved plans, budgets, timelines and technical standards.
  • Act as the main liaison between KRCS, county and sub-county health management teams, facility in-charges, mentors, data officers and technical partners involved in programme delivery.
  • Drive implementation of EmONC, essential newborn care and small/sick newborn care improvements, including newborn corners, stabilization spaces and emergency preparedness measures.
  • Support mentorship, bedside coaching, simulation drills, supportive supervision and case review sessions that build provider competence and confidence.
  • Facilitate the establishment and functioning of quality improvement teams, Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles and MPDSR committees, ensuring death review recommendations translate into concrete actions.
  • Strengthen referral systems and blood access linkages by addressing bottlenecks in escalation, transport, communication and handover between facilities and referral hospitals.
  • Oversee routine data collection, validation, documentation and reporting of MNH indicators, mentorship activities, referral performance and quality improvement actions.
  • Identify and escalate operational, technical, safeguarding and compliance risks while promoting respectful, accountable and safe engagement with health workers and communities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine or Nursing from a recognized institution, with current registration and licensure from the relevant Kenyan professional regulatory body.
  • At least three years of hands-on experience in maternal and newborn health, RMNCAH, or facility-level service delivery, including direct involvement in programme implementation, quality improvement, mentorship or coordination.
  • Solid understanding of EmONC, essential newborn care, small and sick newborn care, referral systems and quality improvement methodologies such as PDSA cycles and MPDSR.
  • Familiarity with Kenyan county health systems, facility operations and public health coordination structures, with the ability to translate technical guidance into practical facility-level action.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills in both English and Kiswahili, with demonstrated ability to build relationships across government, facility and partner teams.
  • Good planning, follow-up, problem-solving and report-writing abilities, including proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and online collaboration platforms.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in resource-constrained, remote or challenging environments; prior experience in ASAL, humanitarian, emergency or hard-to-reach settings is a strong advantage.
  • Experience supporting EmONC service delivery, newborn care programmes, MPDSR processes or referral system strengthening is an added advantage.
