It was founded in France in response to the Biafran War. The organization is known in most of the world by its localized name or simply as MSF; in Canada and the United States the name Doctors Without Borders is commonly used. In 2015 over 30,000, mostly local, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, logistical experts, water and sanitation engineers and administrators provided medical aid in over 70 countries. These doctors and nurses decided to volunteer their time to solve issues of world health. Private donors provide about 90% of the organization's funding, while corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately US$750 million. View more View less

Job Description

Role Overview

You will coordinate the full range of logistics functions that keep a large-scale humanitarian medical project operational in a challenging refugee setting. Day to day, you will oversee vehicle fleets, manage supply chains, maintain infrastructure and communications systems, and supervise a team of logistics staff—ensuring that doctors, nurses, and other medical teams have the equipment, power, transport, and safe facilities they need to treat thousands of patients. This role is central to MSF’s ability to deliver consistent, high-quality care in an environment where every delayed shipment or broken generator directly impacts patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and prioritise daily logistics activities to support medical consultations, hospital services, and community outreach across the project site.
  • Monitor procurement processes and warehouse operations to maintain adequate stock levels of medical supplies, fuel, spare parts, and other critical materials.
  • Manage the vehicle fleet—scheduling preventive maintenance, tracking fuel consumption, and coordinating safe transport for patients, staff, and supplies.
  • Keep HF, VHF, satellite phones, and other communications equipment operational, and train staff on proper use for security and coordination.
  • Supervise maintenance and minor construction of offices, clinics, staff housing, and storage areas, ensuring they remain functional and safe.
  • Contribute to security planning by monitoring transport safety, communication reliability, and technical security measures, and reporting risks to the project coordinator.
  • Lead, train, and schedule your logistics team—conducting performance reviews and fostering a collaborative, service-oriented work culture.
  • Maintain accurate records of logistics contracts, vehicle logs, and maintenance files, and use data to suggest improvements in efficiency or cost.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Secondary education required, with a technical diploma or university degree in Engineering, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • At least two years of professional experience managing logistics activities, ideally within a humanitarian organisation or in a remote, complex operational setting.
  • Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, and Outlook, and familiarity with logistics planning and supply chain principles.
  • Proven ability to coordinate multiple priorities, supervise a team, and communicate effectively in English (knowledge of Somali or Swahili is an advantage).
  • Demonstrated commitment to MSF’s humanitarian principles, with behaviours aligned to teamwork, flexibility, planning, and results orientation.
