Job Description

Role Overview

This position places you at the centre of a busy civil litigation practice, handling a mixed portfolio that spans commercial debt recovery, insurance defence, running down claims, and personal injury disputes. You will carry files from the moment client instructions land on your desk right through to drafting, courtroom advocacy, settlement talks, and the enforcement of judgments. The role suits a self-driven advocate who can keep a heavy caseload moving without close supervision and who understands that timely, well-reasoned legal work directly protects clients' financial and legal interests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file pleadings, witness statements, lists of documents, third-party notices, and formal legal opinions, with a particular focus on motor accident and running down claims.
  • Assess liability exposure and quantum, then advise insurance clients on whether to pursue settlement or proceed to trial.
  • Appear in the Magistrates' Courts and the High Court for trial hearings, formal proofs, cross-examinations, and written submissions, and handle mentions, interlocutory applications, and court-annexed mediations.
  • Negotiate out-of-court settlements and prepare consent orders alongside opposing counsel, loss adjusters, and insurance claims officers.
  • Drive debt recovery by issuing statutory demands, structuring payment plans, filing recovery suits and summary judgment applications, and enforcing judgments through warrants of attachment, garnishee proceedings, judgment debtor summonses, and court auctioneers.
  • Manage files through the Judiciary E-Filing portal, monitor cause lists, statutory timelines, and limitation periods so that no deadline is missed.
  • Provide corporate clients, insurance panels, and supervising partners with clear, timely updates and status reports on file progress.
  • Take on other practice-related duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognised university.
  • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with a valid current Practicing Certificate.
  • At least two years of litigation firm experience, with a focus on insurance claims and debt recovery.
  • Solid working knowledge of civil procedure, torts and negligence, insurance law, contract law, and judgment execution processes.
  • Practical familiarity with the Judiciary E-Filing system, virtual court platforms such as Teams and Zoom, and law practice management software.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large caseload under tight deadlines.
  • Strong legal drafting, research, and courtroom argument skills.
  • Effective negotiation abilities, particularly in settling debt and liability claims.
  • Professional, honest, reliable, and capable of working independently with minimal direction.
  • High level of accuracy and close attention to detail.

What We Offer / Why Join

  • A chance to take genuine ownership of files across a varied civil litigation portfolio.
  • Exposure to both Magistrates' and High Court advocacy, mediation, and enforcement work.
  • An opportunity to advance your legal career within a fast-paced practice environment.
