Job Description

Role Overview

The Manager, Legal, Regulatory & Risk will build and lead Peach Cars’ in-house approach to legal advice, compliance, governance and risk. Working with leaders and operational teams, you’ll help the company make sound commercial decisions while meeting Kenyan requirements and addressing relevant obligations connected to Japan and other Sub-Saharan African markets.

You’ll manage key contracts and corporate records, anticipate legal and regulatory risks, and coordinate with external counsel, government bodies, investors and international partners. The role combines practical day-to-day guidance with the development of processes that can support business growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise leadership and business teams on commercial, employment, operational and regulatory matters, explaining how legal changes may affect current and planned activities.
  • Assess legal and business risks using scenario planning, recommend proportionate mitigation, and maintain a risk register with clear owners and follow-up.
  • Lead the drafting, review, negotiation and standardisation of contracts, balancing commercial objectives with legal, tax and operational considerations.
  • Establish a reliable contract repository, approval process and system for ensuring signed agreements are reflected in day-to-day operations.
  • Oversee compliance with Kenyan laws and sector requirements, including relevant Companies Act, NTSA and KRA obligations; track regulatory changes, filings, licences and statutory registers.
  • Develop and maintain company policies and governance practices, including procedures for internal investigations and disciplinary matters in partnership with People & Culture.
  • Coordinate board and shareholder meeting preparation, minutes, resolutions, corporate records and timely company secretarial filings.
  • Work with Kenyan and Japanese legal teams, investors, external counsel and public authorities on due diligence, fundraising materials, cross-border requirements and regulatory documentation.
  • Build staff understanding of legal and compliance responsibilities, share lessons from previous matters, and coordinate legal work across departments to meet agreed deadlines.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • LL.B degree from a recognised university.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
  • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a valid Practising Certificate.
  • Five to seven years of post-admission experience, preferably in corporate, commercial, regulatory or in-house legal work.
  • Strong knowledge of Kenyan corporate and regulatory requirements, with the ability to identify when specialist advice is needed for international matters.
  • Demonstrated capability in contract negotiation, compliance oversight, governance, legal risk assessment and practical scenario planning.
  • Sound judgement and analytical skills, including the ability to assess incomplete information and give commercially informed advice.
  • Experience coordinating external counsel and working across teams to deliver complex matters to schedule and a high standard.
  • Certified Company Secretary qualification through ICPSK is an advantage.
  • Experience in a fast-growing organisation is an advantage.
  • A proactive, accountable working style, with a willingness to raise concerns early, seek feedback and improve processes.

What We Offer / Why Join

This role offers the opportunity to shape Peach Cars’ legal, regulatory and risk practices as the business develops. You’ll work closely with company leadership and Japanese counterparts, and help prepare the organisation for growth, new products and future due diligence needs.
