Role Overview
This position sits at the entry point of the organisation's legal function, where you will handle day-to-day legal work that keeps operations compliant, defensible and moving forward. You will spend much of your time researching legal questions, preparing documents for court and contract processes, and giving colleagues practical advice they can act on. Because the role touches nearly every part of the organisation, the quality of your drafting and the soundness of your judgement directly affect how well the employer manages risk and pursues its mandate.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and prepare well-reasoned opinions on questions referred by departments, committees and management.
- Draft and review pleadings, affidavits, submissions, agreements, memoranda and other legal instruments for internal use or filing.
- Represent or assist in representing the organisation in courts, tribunals and other dispute resolution forums, including preparing briefs for counsel.
- Maintain an up-to-date case register, bring-up diary and file management system so that no matter is left to lapse through an unattended deadline.
- Review contracts, leases, service agreements and procurement documents to identify legal exposure and recommend protective amendments.
- Advise on statutory compliance, regulatory obligations and the legal implications of proposed policies or decisions.
- Liaise with external advocates, regulators and other stakeholders on ongoing matters, and prepare instructions and status reports for them.
- Support capacity-building within the organisation by briefing staff on legal developments that affect their work.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a university recognised in Kenya.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
- Demonstrable proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets and legal research databases.
- Current membership of the relevant professional body.
- Sound analytical and drafting ability, with the capacity to communicate legal positions clearly to non-lawyers.
- Integrity, discretion and the ability to manage several matters concurrently under time pressure.
