Job Description

Role Overview

As a Legal Officer, you will serve as an in-house legal advisor, translating statutes, regulations and policy frameworks into practical guidance that keeps the organisation's operations lawful and defensible. Day to day, you will draft legal opinions, assess risk across contracts and internal policies, and brief management on active cases and emerging disputes. The position matters because it protects the organisation from legal exposure, strengthens governance, and ensures that every strategic decision is anchored in sound legal reasoning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare well-reasoned legal opinions on a range of operational, contractual and regulatory questions referred by management.
  • Conduct legal risk reviews and deliver advice that helps departments avoid or mitigate exposure before decisions are finalised.
  • Track ongoing cases, assess their progress and implications, and advise management on appropriate next steps.
  • Interpret legal information for staff and stakeholders, and run training sessions that build legal awareness across the organisation.
  • Draft and review contracts, agreements and internal policies, verifying that each document complies with statutory and legal requirements.
  • Monitor compliance across the organisation and report any instances of non-compliance to the relevant authority.
  • Manage pre-litigation disputes and inquiries, including correspondence and negotiations aimed at resolving matters before they escalate.
  • Contribute to policy development, advise on legal policy issues, and implement strategic plans and objectives for the legal function while upholding good governance principles.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognised institution.
  • A Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Advocates Training Programme at the Kenya School of Law.
  • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
  • Current membership of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
  • A cumulative service period of at least three (3) years of relevant work experience as a Legal Officer II or in a comparable position.
