An established employer based in Thika, Kiambu County is recruiting a Legal Officer to act as its in-house legal function. This is a full-time, on-site position suited to a Kenyan advocate who wants broad commercial exposure rather than a narrow specialisation.
Role Overview
Working under the direction of senior executive management, the Legal Officer handles the organisation's day-to-day legal affairs — shaping contracts before they are signed, keeping the business on the right side of Kenyan statute, and steering disputes toward resolution. The position exists because commercial decisions carry legal consequences, and leadership needs a reliable internal voice that can flag exposure early, translate regulation into practical operating guidance, and manage outside counsel without losing control of cost or strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, review, negotiate and finalise commercial agreements, including service level agreements, leases, supply and vendor contracts.
- Keep a single institutional contract register that records key clauses, renewal windows, notice periods and outstanding obligations so nothing lapses unnoticed.
- Prepare legal opinions, policy briefs and risk assessments for executive leadership and departmental heads, presenting options in plain, decision-ready language.
- Monitor the organisation's alignment with Kenyan statutory, regulatory and industrial legal requirements, and coordinate filings, business registrations, licence renewals and governance compliance.
- Write, review and archive internal policies, standard operating procedures and standard-form legal templates used across the business.
- Manage claims, disputes and litigation files, reviewing legal notices, demand letters, court pleadings and formal correspondence before they are issued or responded to.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external law firms — issuing instructions, agreeing fee structures and tracking case progress and costs.
- Carry out ongoing legal research on Kenyan statutes, subsidiary legislation and case law, identify operational risk areas, and recommend mitigation measures while maintaining confidential legal records.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognised university.
- Completion of the Advocates Training Programme at the Kenya School of Law.
- Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a valid current practising certificate and active Law Society of Kenya membership are highly advantageous.
- At least two years of progressive post-qualification experience gained in a commercial enterprise, corporate legal department or law firm.
- Demonstrated ability in commercial contract drafting and negotiation, litigation management, legal research and regulatory compliance work.
- Sound professional judgement and integrity, with the discretion to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
- Strong legal writing and verbal communication skills, plus the analytical and negotiation ability to represent the organisation's interests firmly.
What We Offer
- A monthly salary of KSh 50,000.
- Full-time, on-site employment at the Thika, Kiambu County station.
- Direct reporting line to senior executive management, giving the role genuine influence over commercial and governance decisions.
- Varied, generalist legal work spanning contracts, compliance, corporate governance and dispute resolution rather than a single practice area.
Interested candidates who meet the criteria should submit an updated CV, academic credentials and a cover letter through the designated recruitment channel.
