Role Overview

This is a full-time, six-month field placement with a conservation programme operating across the Maasai Mara ecosystem. You will be embedded in a small research and protection team, helping with daily wildlife surveys, habitat monitoring, and community-facing conservation activities. The role is designed for someone with a background in ecology or environmental science who is ready to move beyond the classroom and apply that knowledge in one of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes. Successful applicants will join the team from the start of the season and must apply by 26 August 2026.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct regular transect surveys to record wildlife species, population numbers, and behavioural observations.
• Deploy and check camera traps, ensuring they are positioned correctly and collecting usable footage for data analysis.
• Assist with vegetation and habitat assessments to track ecosystem health and identify any changes over time.
• Accompany rangers on routine patrols, documenting wildlife activity and reporting any signs of poaching or other threats.
• Support community outreach sessions by helping to prepare materials and engaging with local stakeholders about conservation practices.
• Clean, repair, and calibrate field equipment such as GPS units, binoculars, and data-collection devices.
• Digitise and cross-check field records, maintaining an accurate database for the research team to use in reports.
• Contribute to written summaries and end-of-month briefings that highlight key findings from the field.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A degree or ongoing studies in ecology, biology, zoology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
• Some previous field experience in wildlife research, conservation volunteering, or ecological surveying is strongly preferred.
• Comfortable living and working outdoors in a remote savannah environment with limited infrastructure.
• Strong attention to detail when recording data, with the ability to follow strict survey protocols.
• Physically fit and capable of walking long distances in often hot and difficult terrain.
• Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to adapt to changing field conditions.
• Clear written and spoken English for reporting purposes.
• Familiarity with GPS navigation and data entry is an advantage, as is any prior experience with camera traps or GIS software.
