Role Overview
This position provides day-to-day legal support to the Kenya business, handling commercial, operational, governance, and regulatory matters as they arise. Working closely with the Head of Legal, Kenya, and cross-functional teams, the role keeps legal risk visible and manageable while helping the business pursue its objectives. It matters because the organisation needs someone who can interpret a changing Kenyan legal landscape, maintain sound governance, and resolve contracts and disputes in a way that protects operations and reputation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide timely, practical legal advice to internal teams on commercial, operational, governance, and regulatory issues affecting the Kenya business.
- Track and interpret changes in Kenyan law and regulation, assess their impact on the business, and communicate clear guidance to stakeholders.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and related legal documents, and develop standard templates and precedents to improve efficiency.
- Handle litigation for or against the business as assigned by the Head of Legal, Kenya, including shaping and executing case strategy.
- Support the Head of Legal, Kenya, with entity management and compliance with strong corporate governance practices across Kenyan entities.
- Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives to identify legal risks, anticipate threats, and support the achievement of business objectives.
- Maintain legal records and administrative processes so that resources, information flow, and documentation remain current and reliable.
- Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, communicate legal priorities across functions, and contribute to process improvements that reduce cost and increase efficiency.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A recognized legal qualification from a reputable academic institution.
- Three to four years of post-qualification legal experience at minimum.
- Proven ability to provide practical legal advice to internal business stakeholders.
- Demonstrated litigation management experience.
- Two to three years in a fast-paced law firm is advantageous.
- Company secretarial practice and board support experience, such as CPSK, is desirable.
- Working knowledge of Kenyan substantive and procedural law in areas such as commercial transactions, employment, land, manufacturing or factory operations, and environmental, health and safety regulation.
- Strong negotiation ability and clear written and verbal communication skills.
