Role Overview
This teaching position sits within the culinary department and centers on training students to photograph food to professional standards. Day to day, you will design lesson plans, run hands-on shoots in studio and kitchen settings, demonstrate styling and lighting approaches, and give feedback on student portfolios. Your work directly shapes whether graduates can produce images good enough for restaurant menus, cookbooks, advertising, and social media.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver food photography classes that combine camera technique, lighting, composition, and digital post-processing with practical food styling.
- Demonstrate how to photograph different dishes so they look appetizing, including choosing props, backgrounds, plating, and adjusting for texture, color, and contrast.
- Run practical sessions in kitchens, studios, and campus dining spaces, guiding students through real-world shooting conditions and troubleshooting equipment issues.
- Assess student work through hands-on assignments, practical exams, and portfolio reviews, providing clear, constructive feedback for both technical and creative improvement.
- Collaborate with culinary instructors to ensure the dishes students prepare are also suitable for professional photography—plating, garnish, and portion presentation included.
- Keep the curriculum up to date with current food media trends, industry software, and digital asset management practices, and suggest facility or equipment upgrades.
- Build relationships with local chefs, photographers, hotels, and food media professionals to arrange guest workshops, industry visits, and real-world project opportunities.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and assessment results, and support students preparing for competitions or exhibitions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A diploma or bachelor's degree in Photography, Culinary Arts, Food Media, Hospitality, Visual Communication, or a related discipline.
- Hands-on professional experience in food photography, food styling, culinary media, or hospitality photography, with a portfolio that shows your range.
- Strong practical knowledge of digital camera operations, exposure, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, and both studio and natural-light setups.
- Working proficiency with image-editing and digital asset management tools such as Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, or similar software.
- Solid understanding of food styling principles, plating techniques, and food safety/hygiene practices in a teaching environment.
- Previous teaching, training, coaching, or mentoring experience is preferred, along with the ability to adapt lessons for different skill levels.
- Clear communication skills and an ability to work effectively with both students and fellow academic and technical staff.
