Job Description

Role Overview

This position focuses on delivering high-quality instruction within the Health Records and Information Management department, reporting directly to the department head. The successful candidate will shape future health information professionals by teaching across undergraduate, diploma, and certificate programs, while also contributing to curriculum development, research, and community engagement. Beyond classroom duties, the role supports the university's academic mission through student supervision, examination administration, and scholarly output.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to curriculum design and periodic reviews to ensure programs remain current with professional and industry standards.
  • Draft detailed course outlines that map out weekly topics, learning outcomes, and assessment milestones for each module.
  • Create and update learning materials, including lecture notes, case studies, and practical exercises, to ensure thorough syllabus coverage.
  • Deliver lectures and facilitate discussions for undergraduate, diploma, and certificate cohorts, adapting methods to suit diverse learner levels.
  • Prepare, administer, and invigilate examinations, then provide timely progress reports to the department on student performance.
  • Supervise student research projects and attend defence panels to guide candidates toward successful completion.
  • Conduct original research, publish findings in reputable outlets, and present at conferences to advance knowledge in health records and information management.
  • Pursue external funding opportunities to support institutional research initiatives and departmental priorities.
  • Coordinate field attachments and internships for students, including site visits and post-placement evaluations.
  • Attend official university meetings and events, and monitor lecture attendance to verify that students meet the required four-fifths threshold before sitting for exams.
  • Undertake administrative duties assigned by the department head or university leadership as needed.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A PhD in health records and information management, health informatics, or a closely related discipline from a recognized academic institution.
  • A minimum of three years of substantive teaching experience at a recognized higher education or professional training institution.
  • Current registration with the Health Records & Information Management Board or an equivalent statutory professional body.
  • Alternatively, a master's degree in a relevant field, with documented registration for a PhD program as specified in the institution's teaching staff appointment and promotion guidelines (2020).
  • Masters-level candidates must also have at least three years of teaching experience in a recognized academic institution.
  • Masters-level candidates must demonstrate active progress toward earning a PhD, with a clear timeline for completion.
  • All applicants must show evidence of registration or eligibility for registration with the Health Records & Information Management Board.
