Lecturer — Public Health (Health Management / Health Informatics)

Role Overview

This position carries a dual mandate: teaching public health at both graduate and undergraduate level while driving the research and quality agenda of the department. Day to day, the post-holder moves between the lecture theatre, the supervision table, and the committee room — designing and delivering course content, guiding Master’s and doctoral candidates from proposal through to examination, and helping the department meet the accreditation and regulatory standards that keep its programmes credible. The role matters because it sits at the point where academic rigour meets health-sector practice: the person in this seat shapes the next generation of public health professionals, strengthens the department’s publication and grant record, and helps keep curricula aligned with what health systems actually need.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach across the public health curriculum — lectures, tutorials, seminars, and practical skills sessions — at postgraduate and undergraduate levels, as allocated by the department.
• Contribute technical expertise to the design, revision, and rollout of curricula, syllabi, and training guidelines, including work plans, schedules, and budget inputs.
• Set, moderate, and administer examinations, and take part in both internal and external moderation of university assessment.
• Supervise postgraduate researchers through proposal writing, thesis development, and examination, including identifying suitable supervisors and examiners.
• Provide academic advising, mentorship, and pastoral support to students, and mentor junior academic colleagues such as graduate assistants, tutorial fellows, visiting lecturers, and adjunct faculty.
• Pursue independent and collaborative research in the area of specialisation, secure and manage research or health-development grants, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at conferences and seminars.
• Support quality assurance, audits, accreditation, and reviews of training resources and practice sites.
• Serve on departmental, school, and university committees, represent the department at academic and stakeholder forums, and assist with student recruitment, orientation, and onboarding.

Requirements & Qualifications

• PhD in Public Health (Health Management or Health Informatics) or a closely related health discipline from a recognised institution.
• Formal training in Health Informatics, Health Records, or Health Management.
• Registration with the relevant professional body where this applies.
• At least three years of university teaching experience in public health, health economics, health management, or health informatics, spanning undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and reviewing curricula, and supervising Master’s and/or PhD candidates to completion.
• Track record of reviewing postgraduate proposals, theses, and dissertations, and of contributing to academic committees.
• Evidence of independent and collaborative research plus scholarly publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
• Working knowledge of research methodology, research ethics, and academic integrity requirements, alongside familiarity with postgraduate policies, examination procedures, and higher education regulatory standards.
• Experience in quality assurance, curriculum review, or accreditation processes would be an advantage.
• Strong pedagogical, assessment, and feedback skills, with solid grant-writing and research capability.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication; analytical, critical, and strategic thinking; effective mentoring, coaching, and stakeholder engagement.
• Competence with ICT tools, including learning and research management platforms, and the ability to juggle multiple assignments under tight deadlines.
