Learning Support Lead

Role Overview

This position leads a school’s learning support team, ensuring every learner who needs additional academic, behavioural, or developmental help receives timely and effective intervention. Day to day, you will balance strategic planning with hands-on coordination: guiding support staff, reviewing assessment data, and working alongside classroom teachers to make inclusive education a practical reality across all year groups. Your leadership directly shapes how the school identifies barriers to learning and removes them, which makes this role essential to both student outcomes and the school’s wider commitment to equity.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct the daily operations of the learning support department, setting clear priorities and allocating staff resources where they are needed most.
• Own the school’s inclusion and learning support strategy, aligning it with national education policies and the school’s improvement plan.
• Line-manage learning support teachers and teaching assistants through regular observation, structured feedback, and formal performance reviews.
• Design and maintain departmental handbooks, referral pathways, assessment protocols, and record-keeping systems.
• Organise and oversee the full cycle of learner identification, from initial screening and diagnostic assessment to placement decisions and review meetings.
• Lead the creation, implementation, and tracking of Individual Education Plans, ensuring they are ambitious, measurable, and regularly updated with input from parents and teachers.
• Coach subject teachers on differentiation, helping them adapt lesson content, teaching methods, and assessment tasks to suit diverse learning profiles.
• Monitor the use of classroom accommodations and curriculum modifications, intervening when adjustments are not being applied effectively.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Special Needs Education, Inclusive Education, or a directly related field such as Educational Psychology or Learning Disabilities.
• Active registration as a qualified teacher with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of Kenya.
• At least five years of hands-on teaching experience in special needs or inclusive education settings, with demonstrable success in improving learner outcomes.
• A minimum of two years in a leadership or coordination capacity within a learning support department, including experience supervising other educators.
• Strong knowledge of Kenyan special education policy, assessment frameworks, and statutory requirements around learner support.
• Proven ability to write and evaluate Individual Education Plans, conduct classroom observations, and lead professional development sessions.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of building constructive relationships with parents, external specialists, and teaching colleagues.
