Job Description

Role Overview

This position anchors the field operations for a fiber optic network, placing you in charge of the teams that build, repair, and keep the network alive. Day to day means directing installers on-site, responding to service outages, and performing precision optical work like fusion splicing and OTDR testing — all while keeping customers and the NOC informed. Your work is what keeps connectivity promises intact and ensures faults are cleared before they escalate into larger disruptions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise field crews during fiber installation, routine maintenance, and emergency restoration, ensuring every task follows the prescribed sequence of work.
  • Perform high-quality fusion splicing at distribution hubs and termination points, then verify link integrity using optical power meters, light sources, and OTDR equipment.
  • Isolate and resolve fiber network faults within the agreed SLA, using systematic testing and documentation to speed up restoration and prevent repeat failures.
  • Enforce technical, safety, and quality standards on every job site, from cable handling and bend radius compliance to proper safety gear and tool usage.
  • Coordinate with assistant technicians during large repairs, delegating tasks and reviewing completed work to keep quality uniform across the team.
  • Prepare and submit detailed job completion reports, including splice loss measurements, fault location data, and materials used, for every assigned task.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for clients on-site, explaining basic troubleshooting steps and answering questions about fiber service behavior and limitations.
  • Communicate fault progress and restoration updates to NOC personnel in real time, and carry out any additional field-related duties as assigned by the field supervisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in telecommunications, fiber optics, electronics, or a closely related field.
  • At least two years of hands-on experience in a fiber optic field role, including direct work on live networks and restoration efforts.
  • Solid grasp of fiber network architecture, including passive optical networks, distribution hubs, and last-mile connectivity principles.
  • Proven skill in fiber handling, stripping, cleaning, splicing, and connector termination without introducing avoidable losses.
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber schematics and trace lines, and to use OTDR traces and power meter readings to pinpoint faults.
  • Strong analytical troubleshooting with a methodical approach to diagnosing issues under time pressure.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills for client-facing explanations, reporting, and coordination with NOC teams.
  • Comfortable working in various outdoor and confined-space environments and following strict health and safety procedures.
