Job Description

Role Overview

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will carry out advanced diagnostic analyses on patient specimens—such as blood, tissue, and body fluids—to support clinicians in identifying diseases and monitoring treatments. Your daily work involves operating sophisticated laboratory equipment, verifying test results against strict quality benchmarks, and documenting findings in the health information system. This role is critical to ensuring accurate diagnoses and safe patient care within a high-volume hospital or clinical laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of complex laboratory tests—including haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and immunoassay procedures—following established protocols and safety standards.
  • Prepare, process, and examine specimens to identify abnormalities, pathogens, or chemical imbalances, and interpret preliminary results for reporting.
  • Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments such as analysers, centrifuges, and microscopes; troubleshoot minor malfunctions and escalate unresolved issues.
  • Document test outcomes accurately in the Health Management Information System (HMIS) and maintain patient confidentiality throughout the data chain.
  • Participate in internal and external quality control programmes, including running control samples, reviewing performance indicators, and implementing corrective actions when results deviate.
  • Adhere to laboratory quality management system (QMS) requirements, ISO standards, and infection prevention guidelines to minimise errors and contamination risks.
  • Manage inventory of reagents, consumables, and reference materials; monitor stock levels and place orders in a timely manner to avoid workflow interruptions.
  • Collaborate with clinicians and nursing staff to clarify test requests, provide preliminary advice on sample suitability, and ensure proper specimen collection and transport procedures.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences or a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognised institution.
  • At least one year of supervised internship or residency experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Current, valid registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) and a practising licence.
  • Demonstrated training in Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS) and practical understanding of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Proficiency in using Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) and standard office software; ability to learn new laboratory information platforms quickly.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact clearly with laboratory colleagues and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work independently on complex tasks while maintaining meticulous attention to detail, especially under time-sensitive conditions.
