Job Description

Role Overview

This role leads the day-to-day clinical and operational performance of all inpatient medical services, with direct responsibility for supervising the team of inpatient medical officers. The work centres on keeping patient care safe and efficient while ensuring that beds, staffing, investigations, procedures and specialist input are used well. By shaping ward workflows and team behaviour, this position has a direct effect on patient outcomes, patient experience and the hospital’s ability to meet quality and operational targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily inpatient activity, including timely admission, assessment, investigation, referral, transfer and discharge decisions, and coordinate bed placement to match clinical priority with available capacity.
  • Supervise and support inpatient medical officers, manage rosters and on-call coverage, and coordinate consultant availability so that specialist input is always accessible for complex or deteriorating patients.
  • Run and participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, ensuring that care plans are agreed, communicated and acted on promptly by all teams involved.
  • Monitor patient flow, length of stay, delayed discharges and unplanned transfers to intensive care or high-dependency units, and resolve the operational bottlenecks that slow a patient’s journey.
  • Lead clinical quality and governance work within the inpatient team, including incident reporting, root cause analysis, mortality and morbidity reviews, quality improvement projects and follow-up of corrective actions.
  • Ensure clinical records, treatment pathways and documentation meet hospital standards, and confirm that protocols, medication safety and infection prevention practices are followed consistently.
  • Coordinate teaching and supervision for medical interns and postgraduate trainees, and promote ongoing professional development for the wider medical officer team.
  • Track performance data, patient feedback and key indicators, then use insights to improve patient experience, financial sustainability and operational effectiveness.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Medical degree from a recognised institution with full registration and a valid practising licence with the relevant medical regulatory body.
  • At least five years of post-internship clinical experience in an inpatient or hospital setting, including direct supervisory responsibility for medical staff.
  • Demonstrated understanding of patient flow management, bed capacity planning, discharge processes and multidisciplinary team coordination.
  • Working knowledge of clinical governance, patient safety, incident investigation, quality improvement methodology and audit processes.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to manage rosters, supervise staff, resolve conflict and sustain team morale.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interactions with patients, families, specialists, nursing leadership, hospital administration and external training institutions.
  • Analytical ability to interpret performance metrics, identify trends, and translate data into practical improvements in care delivery.
  • Familiarity with medical training and internship programmes, including supervision, assessment and structured feedback.
