The idea of establishing a University goes back many years to the time when Njuri Ncheke (Council of elders of Meru people) conceived an idea of establishing an institution of higher learning in Meru. Consequently, the NJURI NCHEKE ELDERS set aside 641 acres of land near the Njuri Ncheke’s Shrine at Nchiru for the same. In the mid-1960s, the elders initiated the process of establishing an institution of higher learning. It was decided that the Meru community raise funds for establishment of a College of Technology. As a result, Meru College of Technology (MECOTECH) was founded and opened its doors to its first batch of students in 1983 with an intake of fifty four (54) students all of whom were enrolled in Agriculture. In 1985 Motor Vehicle Engineering and later in 1987 building courses were introduced. MECOTECH offered diploma and certificate courses in automotive engineering, agriculture and extension, information technology, accounting, electrical engineering, building and masonry and business administration, among others. MUCST had its first intake in May 2009, admitting forty five (45) students in three (3) degree programmes: Bachelor of Commerce (B-COM), Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBIT), and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Bsc. IT). The institution has since grown to offer four (4) Masters programmes, thirteen (13) Degree programmes, eight (8) Diploma and five (5) Certificate programmes. MUCST was formally launched by His Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki C.G.H., M.P., President and Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces of the Republic of Kenya on Saturday 17th April, 2010 The objective of the University is to play a leading role in the development and expansion of opportunities for higher education and research in Agriculture, Forestry, Mining, Energy, Water and Environmental Science and arid and semi-arid lands. The University aims at becoming a regional leader in the discovery, preservation and dissemination of knowledge in the area of Science and technology and related disciplines. View more View less

Job Description

Role Overview

This role centres on designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise software solutions built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, supporting core administrative and academic functions within a higher education environment. Day-to-day work involves translating complex institutional requirements into reliable code, integrating the ERP system with other campus platforms via RESTful and OData APIs, and ensuring seamless data flow across finance, student records, and procurement modules. The position matters because it directly underpins the institution’s operational efficiency, enabling accurate reporting, streamlined workflows, and a stable digital backbone for students and staff alike.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, customise, and maintain extensions and add-ons for Dynamics 365 Business Central (formerly Navision 2018), focusing on business logic, reporting, and data migration.
  • Develop and maintain cross-platform applications using PHP, Python, C#, or JavaScript to interface with core ERP systems and support web-based front-end needs.
  • Design and implement integrations between Dynamics 365 BC and third-party systems (student information systems, HR portals, payment gateways) using RESTful, OData, JSON, and SOAP API services.
  • Create and optimise relational database queries in SQL or MySQL, ensuring data integrity and performance for large-scale institutional datasets.
  • Administer and configure Windows Server environments that host the ERP and related applications, including troubleshooting connectivity, security, and patch management.
  • Collaborate with functional analysts and end-users across departments (finance, academic registry, IT) to gather requirements, test solutions, and document technical specifications.
  • Support the full software development lifecycle—from prototyping and coding to deployment and post-launch maintenance—while adhering to internal change management and quality assurance processes.
  • Stay current with Microsoft Dynamics 365 BC updates and best practices, contributing to roadmap planning and system upgrade projects.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Software Engineering.
  • At least three years of professional experience as a software developer within an organisation comparable to a higher learning institution (e.g., university, college, or research institute).
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or Navision 2018, including development, customisation, and configuration.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages used in cross-platform development: PHP, Python, C#, and JavaScript.
  • Demonstrated experience building and consuming APIs (RESTful, OData, JSON, SOAP) for system integration.
  • Strong working knowledge of relational database design and querying in SQL or MySQL.
  • Practical experience with Windows Server administration, including configuration, security hardening, and management of services.
  • Microsoft certification in Dynamics 365 Business Central or Navision is required.
  • Registration with a relevant professional body (e.g., ICT Authority, Computer Society of Kenya, or equivalent).
  • Compliance with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 (including clearance from relevant authorities as stipulated).
