Job Description

Role Overview

This role sits at the heart of the geography teaching team, taking day-to-day ownership of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical fieldwork sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Beyond classroom delivery, the Lecturer is expected to build an active research profile, publish scholarly work, and help shape and renew the geography curriculum in response to evolving academic and professional standards. This position matters because it directly influences students' learning experience, research culture, and the department's standing within the university and the wider academic community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver well-structured lectures, seminars, and laboratory or fieldwork-based sessions across core geography areas, including physical geography, human geography, environmental studies, and research methods.
  • Develop assessment materials, mark student work, and provide constructive feedback that helps learners understand and improve their academic performance.
  • Supervise student research projects, dissertations, and theses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, offering regular guidance and academic support.
  • Actively pursue a personal research agenda, producing peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and other meaningful academic outputs.
  • Participate in curriculum review and module development, bringing current scholarly insight and practical relevance into programme design.
  • Contribute to departmental meetings, committees, and collaborative research activities, engaging with colleagues to strengthen the academic environment.
  • Support students through academic advising, office hours, and mentorship, helping them build subject knowledge, study skills, and professional confidence.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A PhD in Geography, environmental science, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university. A relevant Master's degree combined with active registration for a PhD will also be considered.
  • University-level teaching or research experience, ideally at least three years, with evidence of research publications or clear potential to produce high-quality academic research.
  • Membership in relevant professional or academic bodies is considered an added advantage.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to make complex geographical concepts accessible to students at different levels.
  • Practical experience using learning technologies, statistical software, GIS tools, or other research methods relevant to geography teaching and scholarship.
  • A demonstrated commitment to academic integrity, student success, and ongoing professional development.
