Job Description

Role Overview

You will be the technical backbone of a mission-driven financial inclusion platform, working primarily on Apache Fineract and the surrounding core banking ecosystem. Day to day, you will customise lending and banking workflows, build APIs that connect internal and third-party systems, and keep production services stable through testing, upgrades, and troubleshooting. Your work directly enables the organisation to scale digital financial services and business support across East and Central Africa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain customised Fineract core banking functionality, from loan product configurations to financial service workflows.
  • Develop internal web applications and automation tools that digitise operational processes and reduce manual work for staff.
  • Integrate Odoo ERP, Fineract, and other enterprise systems by building reliable REST APIs and event-driven services, collaborating with vendors and internal stakeholders.
  • Support an API-first architecture by creating and maintaining services around the core banking system, using Java, Spring Boot, and Kafka.
  • Build client-facing digital experiences across web, mobile, and IVR channels, ensuring they remain simple and accessible for users with limited digital literacy.
  • Work alongside business analysts, product managers, and project managers to translate user needs into practical technical solutions using human-centred design.
  • Monitor and improve data flows from operational systems like KoboToolbox into databases, reporting platforms, and analytics tools.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, maintain existing applications, and provide technical support across the broader technology team.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional software development experience, including delivery in production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Apache Fineract, ideally in development or customisation of the platform in a live system.
  • Strong Java and Spring/Spring Boot development experience, with a solid understanding of REST API design and integration.
  • Good SQL and relational database skills, with the ability to design queries, troubleshoot data issues, and maintain data integrity.
  • Working knowledge of Git, automated testing, software development lifecycle practices, and Agile methodologies.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve issues in existing systems, while identifying risks and dependencies early in delivery.
  • A collaborative mindset that values trust, open communication, informed decision-making, and mentorship of junior developers.

What We Offer / Why Join

This role sits within a high-growth, mission-driven social enterprise, giving you the chance to apply your technical skills to work that directly creates livelihoods and economic opportunity across the region. You’ll join a collaborative and entrepreneurial team that values innovation, inclusion, and long-term impact.

  • Competitive salary with the potential for a performance-based bonus.
  • Health insurance coverage for you and your family.
  • Staff savings and provident fund options with negotiated bank rates for long-term employees.
  • Generous annual leave, parental leave, and sabbatical options.
  • Opportunities for continuous learning and professional growth alongside diverse colleagues from across East and Central Africa.
