Role Overview
This position oversees the daily accounting operations, ensuring that all financial data is captured, reconciled, and reported with precision. You will lead a small team of accounting staff, maintain the integrity of the general ledger, and prepare management accounts that drive business decisions. The role is critical for keeping the company compliant with IFRS, local tax laws, and internal policies while supporting growth through accurate financial oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the Chart of Accounts by aligning it with group standards and ensuring the accounting system's structure stays logical and audit-ready.
- Ensure the General Ledger and Trial Balance adhere to IFRS, company policies, and statutory requirements, and review all journal entries while maintaining proper segregation of duties.
- Complete monthly balance sheet reconciliations, investigate reconciling items, and resolve them within agreed timeframes.
- Analyse profit and loss statements and balance sheets to spot risks, unusual trends, or errors, and present findings for management review.
- Manage the Fixed Asset Register from acquisition to disposal, including tagging, depreciation calculations, and periodic reconciliation with the General Ledger.
- Prepare and submit statutory returns (e.g., VAT, income tax, withholding tax) to the Kenya Revenue Authority accurately and on time, and maintain all regulatory registers.
- Perform complex accounting calculations such as IFRS 16 lease liabilities, loan amortisation schedules, and tax provisions.
- Support internal and external audits by providing requested documentation, answering queries, and preparing financial analyses.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
- Professional accounting certification (CPA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) is required.
- At least five years of experience in a finance or accounting role, ideally in a fast-growing or dynamic organisation.
- Strong financial reporting and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and communicate insights clearly.
- High attention to detail, excellent organisational abilities, and comfort working independently under multiple deadlines.
- Proven interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively across teams and with external stakeholders.
- Hands-on experience with accounting software such as Xero, Netsuite, or similar platforms is preferred.
