Job Description

Role Overview

This position is responsible for safeguarding personnel, assets, and operational continuity across Inkomoko’s Kenyan field locations, with a primary focus on Dadaab and Garissa. The Field Security Associate will work side by side with the Security Focal Person and Operations Manager to turn security policy into practical, day-to-day protection measures—covering risk assessments, emergency preparedness, movement tracking, and liaison with local actors. The role matters because it enables Inkomoko’s field teams to work safely in a complex, fragile environment while continuing to support entrepreneurs and refugee communities without interruption.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver daily incident alerts and bi-weekly analytical security reports to the Security Focal Person, including contextual updates on the local situation in Dadaab, the refugee camps, and Garissa.
  • Carry out security risk assessments for new locations, routes, offices, and project activities, then recommend practical mitigation measures to line and location managers.
  • Support the enhancement of Standard Operating Procedures, contingency plans, and emergency protocols by identifying gaps, proposing updates, and maintaining accurate security tools and records.
  • Track and report on staff movements, ensuring travel plans are approved, routes are vetted, and movement procedures are followed in volatile areas.
  • Facilitate security training for drivers, guards, and field staff on topics such as travel security, access control, situational awareness, and incident response; also conduct security inductions for new or visiting field personnel.
  • Coordinate the setup, inspection, and maintenance of safety equipment including safe rooms, vehicle security measures, CCTV, fencing, and access control systems; conduct regular audits and recommend upgrades.
  • Liaise with NGOs, UN agencies, security forces, government offices, and community leaders to maintain an active information network, negotiate field access, and represent Inkomoko at security forums and meetings.
  • Support logistics and operations in planning secure transportation routes, scheduling movements, and ensuring emergency preparedness plans—such as fire drills, evacuation procedures, and medical emergency responses—are tested and ready.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Security Management, Risk Management, Emergency or Disaster Management, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • At least 6 years of professional experience in safety and security management, ideally within a social enterprise, NGO, or similarly complex operational environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing security for multi-site operations and supervising or coordinating diverse teams, including drivers, guards, and field staff.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Dadaab/Garissa security landscape, including the refugee camp context, local dynamics, and key security actors.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to remain calm, decisive, and solution-oriented under pressure or in emergencies.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili; Somali language proficiency is an added advantage.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and ERP systems, and willingness to use technology for reporting, tracking, and communication.
  • Proven ability to build trust with diverse stakeholders—from community leaders to government officials—and to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in sensitive situations.
