Role Overview
In this role, you will verify that embedded hardware and firmware perform reliably, from early prototypes through commercial deployment. You will work closely with R&D and product design teams to uncover and resolve faults, while testing solar water-pumping and power systems under practical operating conditions. Your findings will help engineering teams make informed release decisions and support dependable field launches.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and carry out structured tests for prototype and production hardware and firmware, recording methods, results, and any deviations.
- Work with engineering and product design colleagues to validate control functions and investigate issues observed in real-world settings.
- Inspect circuit boards, probe components, flash firmware, and diagnose embedded systems based on ESP32, Atmel AVR, and NRF microcontrollers.
- Use oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other diagnostic equipment to assess electrical behaviour and locate faults.
- Measure water flow, power consumption, and system efficiency in solar pumping and power applications, checking results against performance requirements.
- Investigate hardware failures and firmware defects, determine likely root causes, and keep issue logs prioritised and current.
- Maintain test records, device histories, technical documentation, and release notes across pilot and production stages.
- Present clear test conclusions to technical and non-technical stakeholders, provide advanced support for field pilots, and train operations and support teams ahead of commercial launches.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Mechatronics Engineering; a master’s degree is preferred.
- At least two years of practical experience testing embedded hardware and firmware.
- Ability to interpret PCB schematics, probe circuits, and use oscilloscopes and multimeters; experience with Eagle CAD is an advantage.
- Working knowledge of solar energy systems, DC/DC converter topologies, and the design considerations involved in off-grid solar equipment.
- Experience diagnosing and tracking microcontroller firmware issues, particularly on ESP32, Atmel AVR, or NRF51/52 platforms.
- Experience in off-grid solar or solar water pumping is strongly preferred.
- An EPRA T2 or T3 licence is an advantage.
- Strong analytical and fault-investigation skills, with the ability to prioritise work effectively in a fast-moving environment.
- Clear written and spoken English, including the ability to explain technical results to audiences without an engineering background.
- Familiarity with AI tools or practical exposure to machine learning and AI-assisted research or testing methods is a strong advantage.
