Role Overview
This is the role where a client's brief stops being a sketch and becomes steel. Reporting to the Production Manager and based at the Athi River workshop, the Designer turns specifications into 2D layouts, 3D models, shop-ready fabrication drawings, and accurate cutting lists that welders and fitters can build from directly — covering everything from gates, doors and windows to railings, staircases, structural frames and partitions. The position also reaches beyond the drawing board, with site visits to measure, verify and troubleshoot, so the drawings issued to the floor are buildable, economical and correct the first time.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed 2D layouts and 3D models for metalwork and structural projects, including gates, doors, windows, steel railings, staircases, structural frames and partitions.
- Rework and refine designs to cut material waste, reduce fabrication cost and strengthen structural performance.
- Detail dimensions, section cuts, elevations and assembly views for complex fabrication jobs so nothing is left to guesswork in the workshop.
- Issue fabrication drawings, assembly guides, installation plans and precise material cutting lists to the production team.
- Work alongside welders, fitters and fabricators on the shop floor, answering design queries and resolving manufacturability issues as they arise.
- Inspect work in progress against approved drawings and tolerances, and carry out quality control checks on drawings before they are released to production.
- Travel to project sites to take physical measurements, assess existing structural conditions and confirm mounting and fixing details before fabrication starts.
- Support installation crews on site with alignment problems and confirm that completed fittings match the approved client design.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil or Structural Engineering, Architecture, Product Design, or a closely related discipline.
- Practical, demonstrable experience designing fabricated metal products, steel structures or architectural metalwork.
- Prior exposure to an active factory or workshop environment, working with welders, fabricators and installation teams, is a strong advantage.
- Advanced proficiency in modern 2D and 3D CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, SketchUp or Tekla Structures.
- Solid grasp of fabrication allowances, welding symbols, material schedules, structural tolerances and site survey techniques.
- Strong spatial awareness, an eye for aesthetic detail, analytical thinking and clear communication with both office and workshop colleagues.
