Job Description

This senior nursing leadership role operates at the county or national level of public health services, where the post holder acts as the principal technical authority on nursing practice and standards. The position involves shaping policy, advising government health leaders, and ensuring that nursing care across the system remains safe, ethical, and evidence-based. Day-to-day work spans policy development, strategic planning, workforce training, and monitoring the quality and effectiveness of nursing programmes.

Role Overview

As a senior director in nursing services, you will provide specialised technical guidance to health sector leadership, translating clinical knowledge into national and county-level policy. You will drive the continuous improvement of nursing practice by reviewing care standards, developing training pathways, and ensuring that service delivery aligns with regulatory and ethical requirements. Your work directly influences how nursing services are planned, budgeted, and delivered across the health system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise national and county health authorities on nursing specialty issues, including the development and dissemination of policies, standards, and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Lead the formulation, implementation, and periodic review of healthcare policies that govern nursing services and patient care.
  • Initiate and oversee the development and revision of nurse training programmes, ensuring curricula reflect current clinical practice and emerging healthcare needs.
  • Monitor compliance with nursing standards, ethical codes, and professional guidelines across public health facilities.
  • Develop specifications and standards for nursing commodities and participate in procurement planning to ensure safe, reliable supply of essential nursing materials.
  • Compile and present monitoring and evaluation reports on nursing service performance, using data to inform policy decisions and service improvements.
  • Ensure nursing research findings are reviewed and applied to policy development and care delivery models.
  • Prepare departmental strategic plans, annual budgets, and work plans, and support training and career development for nursing staff.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least three years of service in the grade of Senior Assistant Director of Nursing Services or an equivalent position.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Midwifery from a recognised institution; OR a Higher Diploma in one of the Kenya Registered specialties including Community Health Nursing, Anaesthetic Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Peri-operative Nursing, Ophthalmology Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Accident & Emergency Nursing, Neonatal Nursing, Nephrology Nursing, or Palliative Nursing; OR an advanced Diploma in Nursing Education/Psychology, Nursing Administration, Community Health Nursing, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, or Clinical Care.
  • A Master's degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Oncology and Palliative Care Nursing, Forensic Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Nursing Education, Nursing Management, or Geriatric Nursing from a recognised institution.
  • Current registration certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • A valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • A certificate in Strategic Leadership Development Programme lasting at least six weeks from a recognised institution.
  • A certificate in computer application skills from a recognised institution.
  • Demonstrated professional competence, strong administrative capability, and broad experience in nursing, healthcare standards, and health programme implementation.
