Job Description

Role Overview

The International Health Data Engineering group owns the Data Integration Hub that sits at the centre of the International Health Delivery Services organisation, drawing data in from policy administration and other source systems and publishing it to a wide set of consumers — customer-facing web portals alongside internal and external integrations. Day to day, this role writes and maintains the T-SQL and SSIS logic that keeps those flows accurate and on schedule, and helps shape how the team's data solutions are designed and coded. Because so many business initiatives depend on the hub, the reliability of this work directly determines what the wider organisation is able to deliver.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test and maintain ETL processes and data integration logic that move information from policy administration and other source systems into the central hub.
  • Develop and change T-SQL objects — complex stored procedures, views and functions — and SSIS packages across both project delivery and ongoing business-as-usual work streams.
  • Diagnose and resolve SQL Server issues, including slow-running queries and batch jobs, tuning performance where it matters.
  • Work alongside senior database developers to gather requirements, agree technical designs, and take part in project workshops and meetings.
  • Model and document data mappings, settling the best approach with business and technical stakeholders before implementation.
  • Support regular releases and monitor scheduled batch processing, stepping in when jobs fail or output looks wrong.
  • Proactively put forward improvements to code, tooling and the team's ways of working.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least five years spent developing and supporting SQL Server solutions in a production environment.
  • Expert-level T-SQL, with proven ability to write complex stored procedures, views and functions.
  • Strong grasp of database fundamentals, including query optimisation, indexing and performance tuning.
  • Practical experience building ETL routines with SSIS.
  • Familiarity with both OLAP and OLTP environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving instincts and a talent for reverse engineering complex or unfamiliar code.
  • Experience working within Agile development methodologies.

Advantageous, though not essential:

  • Exposure to C# or Python.
  • Familiarity with modern data engineering tooling such as PySpark and Databricks.
  • Basic experience with cloud platforms and services.
  • Use of source control (for example Git) and CI/CD practices.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI or similar.
  • Previous work with health insurance or healthcare data.

Why Join This Team

  • Your own ideas and expertise are actively welcomed — the team expects its engineers to have a say in how data-driven solutions are designed and coded, not just to implement them.
  • Ongoing training and learning are encouraged so your skills stay current as the technology landscape shifts.
  • The role puts you in contact with a broad range of teams working across different technical disciplines and different geographic locations, giving you wide visibility across the International Health Delivery Services organisation.
