Role Overview
This position sits at the heart of a fast-paced quick-commerce darkstore, where every shift revolves around turning incoming digital orders into accurate, dispatch-ready bags within tight time windows. You will move through temperature-controlled aisles with a handheld scanner, pulling the exact products shown on each ticket, checking them against quality and freshness rules, and packing them so they survive the journey to the customer. The speed and precision you bring to this role has a direct effect on on-time delivery performance, how much stock is lost to damage or expiry, and whether shoppers keep coming back.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow digital order tickets on a handheld device or picking app, moving through the store to retrieve each requested item without unnecessary delays.
- Inspect every product before it goes into the bag—checking expiry dates, packaging integrity, and visual freshness—and set aside anything that does not meet the store’s quality bar.
- Group items into the correct temperature and handling categories (ambient, chilled, frozen, fragile) so that cold-chain rules are respected and breakage is avoided.
- Log out-of-stock items, near-expiry products, and quantity mismatches in real time so the inventory team can act before these issues affect more orders.
- Rotate stock on shelves using first-expired-first-out principles, making sure older products are picked before newer deliveries.
- Keep the picking area, shelving, and packing stations clean and organised, following food-safety and hygiene procedures at all times.
- Step in to support receiving, put-away, and periodic stock counts during quieter parts of the shift when asked by the supervisor.
- Follow PPE and cold-room safety rules, and flag any faults with scanners, printers, or refrigeration units promptly to avoid downtime.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum KCSE certificate or an equivalent qualification that demonstrates basic literacy and numeracy.
- Ability to read order tickets, understand product labels, and operate a smartphone or handheld scanning device confidently.
- Previous experience in retail, warehousing, FMCG, or quick-commerce fulfilment is useful but not essential—full training on picking systems and store procedures will be provided.
- Strong attention to detail, especially when judging the quality of fresh produce, dairy, and packaged goods under time pressure.
- Physical stamina for standing, walking, reaching, and lifting items up to roughly 15kg throughout a shift, including time spent in chilled or frozen storage areas.
- Comfortable working in a team and staying accurate during rush periods, such as lunchtime and evening peaks.
- Reliability and honesty are non-negotiable because your handling of inventory directly influences store shrinkage and profitability.
- Willingness to work on a rotating roster covering early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays to match customer demand.
What We Offer / Why Join
- A clear path for progression within a growing quick-commerce operation, from Picker to Shift Lead and then Supervisor, based on performance.
- Structured onboarding that covers picking technology, food-safety standards, and standard operating procedures before you work independently.
- Performance-linked incentives tied to store-level KPIs, so strong picking speed and accuracy are recognised and rewarded.
